Ford Ka Won't Unlock In Thru Boot Help! - Lee182
Hope someone can help.

My girlfriend's 1997 Ka2's door locks will not open after she has locked it up, only way she can get in is thru the boot!!

It seems to stem from the drivers side, she puts the key in but nothing, won't open although it WILL lock everthing up.

Any ideas? she has had to disconnect the wires on the inside of the door ( that black plastic screw cap thingy- sorry i don't know what it's called exactly) but that also disables her windows and radio!

Anyone any ideas as i feel she may get ripped off on this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lee,

Why has she had to disconnect these?
Ford Ka Won't Unlock In Thru Boot Help! - Lee182
Hi, only so she doesnt have to climb thru the boot to get in, for some reason disconnecting this allows her to lock up ok.

It turns the radio and windows off instead though as a result.

So when this...thing is not disconnected, she can't lock the doors? Not even manually?
Ford Ka Won't Unlock In Thru Boot Help! - bell boy
"the thing", adam is the multi connector that supplies the power for the speakers and electric windows.

That's my point. What does it have to do with the locks?
Ford Ka Won't Unlock In Thru Boot Help! - bell boy
non adam unless it has central locking.the thing is its either the key thats worn the lock thats worn or it may just need a bit of oil to bring back to spec, ka"s tend to be second cars that are parked up drives or go on the school run and are not usually locked as much as other cars this can be why the lock mechanism fails and a good lube will cure the problem, fiesta"s are the same, however the use of the term ripped off i hate, i dont like that on one hand people want help from the trade but also stigmatise us as rip off merchants.

Sorry, yes it has central locking and i don't want to tar everyone with the same brush regards 'ripping' her off just that it does happen, fact of life but to the nice guys out there keep up the good work.

Tryed WD40 on the lock but no luck.

Ford Ka Won't Unlock In Thru Boot Help! - bell boy
ideally you need to take the lock out and keep feeding the oil in (duck oil is better than wd)to free it if this doesnt work then i advise that you go to your ford dealer with your good?ignition key and ask him to build you a lock to this it will cost approx £35 all in, ford locks on this kind of year to be honest are carp.

I've had a similar problem;it turned out to be a sticking switch in the passenger door lock(which doesn't get used very often) overiding the other locks. The fix was a stronger spring to ensure the lock returned to it's central position.

Presumably it has central locking other wise she would not be using the boot instead of the passenger side.If disconnecting affects it it is obviously an electrical problem rather than a fault with the lock mechanism.Take it to an autoelectrician rather than a M/D who may 'rip you off',or at least charge a lot more.

Follow oldmans advice - new lock barrel and have a new key cut too. The locks on Fords from this era are useless - on two Fiestas I had four new ones fitted - one was the ignition which isn't helpful when you are camping in Cornwall!

The key will lock the doors because any Ford key of this era will lock any other Ford car lock.

This can't work if disconnecting the electrics has an effect!!It is more likely to be affected by the central locking switches. These have 3 positions, lock, neutral and unlock-it sounds like one of these switches(passenger door??) has got stuck in the "lock" position.

I agree whole-heartedly with your comments re. "ripping-off." [Please don't "cool it" at all. Sorry DD; but I thought he was quite right.]

The only way that I can see that disconnecting the door-plug would make a difference, is if the central-locking were "cycling." Ie. the moment the driver's door was manually unlocked the motor instantly re-locked it.

This would happen if the passenger's door motor was stuck in the locked position and was thus continuously sending a "lock now" signal - possibly because it hadn't received an "unlock" signal in the first place. The most usual reason for this is severe corrosion in those door-plugs: though I did have a Ka once that lost continuity in the link wiring somewhere under the dash.

What happens if the passenger door [or even the tailgate - or is that key-only on this one?] is disconnected? Does the driver's door then function manually?

Not disconnected the passenger side, only the drivers side because thats where the fault is. Once disconnected, the passenger side still works, drivers side does not.

Central locking systems are an integrated feedback network of circuits. Don't assume that the effects always show-up in the place where the fault actually is.

Remove the passenger door plug and check for pin corrosion.

Ok, will look into that thanks.
