My son is 17 and is eager to start driving .
I have no idea on what he can and cannot drive now as i understand it is not like when i starting driving.
New Driver - Adam {P}
A car and a milk float I think.

He could drive an M5 if he wanted providing he was insured on it.
New Driver - AngryJonny
...and displayed L plates and was accompanied by another driver who was at least 21 years of age and had held a licence for a minimum of 3 years. And didn't drive on a Motorway.

Errm, i have led to believe that there is to be a maximum of 1000cc for new drivers, is this not true then.
New Driver - Adam {P}
No it certainly isn't.

I learnt in what I'm driving now.

I am sure he will love an Agricultural tractor or self propelled mowing machine.

RF's right. Look at the pros - cheaper than insuring him on your car, less space needed in the garage, and he mows your lawn whilst driving.

I personally can't see any holes in that idea.

Emergency stops?
New Driver - bell boy
only 4 lawns to the gallon?
New Driver - Adam {P}
Not a problem - it only does 2mph.

Just noticed though - it's gearless - might me a problem.

My son passed his test when nearly 18 and we moved house meaning he needed a car to get to school.

We provided a 1.0 Corsa and a dose of advice, first time out alone he went over a crest just before a bend and slid off sideways to the right (narrow single carriageway, NSL, dry, light - no excuses). Missed substantial tree by a few feet. They are taught to drive AT THE INDICATED SPEED LIMIT!

Took him back to scene and asked him what he would have done if there had been pedestrians/horse/other car on the piece of road he slid across, or if he had hit the tree! and stressed that the limit is the maximum, not how fast you go - I think he drives a little more maturely now.

Whatever you put him in it will be fast enough for him to kill himself, or someone else.

I've just spoken to him and he has been told me that as of the end of this month he will be limited to 1100 cc.
Do not know where he got this info but obviously wrong.
As an aside ,i passed my tractor test when i was sixteen and was sent a full license, when the bosses wife studied it she thought that tractors were in a different catagory meaning as i was the only one who had passed my tractor test i was the only one on the farm who could drive them, i do not think she was right but studying the "what you can and cannot drive" am not sure.

Glen - that rumour was going around when I was learning. Along with the "driving age being put up to age 21".

As (I think it was Ian) said, young lads can kill themselves in a Matiz. I did some pretty stupid things in a Fiesta. Besides which, there aren't a million cars in the world that are under 1100 cc anyway.
New Driver - bedfordrl
Exactly what we thought, could not not think of many cars that were under 1100cc and if it was true imagine how the price of these cars would rise.

It seems that every year there's a new 'scare' story amongst the 17 year olds, seems this year's is a size limit a la motorcycle learners, have heard the same from a couple of my son's friends. Last year's 'scare' was that from 1st June everyone was going to have to be over 18 to drive anything. That was just as groundless but incensed a few more of his mates.
Might be some sense in either suggestion but certainly neither are in the pipeline at the moment, from what I can determine, anyway.

Probably based on whatis realistic to insure at that age.

My mates parents (farming family) were of the opinion that their sons were bound to crash within the first 2 years of driving, so better to have a safe car to do it in.
So he and his 2 brothers were all provided with old Volvo 240 estates when they passed their tests. And I know 2 of them crashed, possibly the third brother too.
Dont know how you'd get on insuring one of those for him nowadays though, and he wouldnt want to drive one!

I managed to write off an MG Metro when I was 19. The experience slowed my driving down and it took me a while to get my confidence back on wet roads.

It might be worth taking your son for some skid pan training?
New Driver - The Lawman
My mate's folks had teh same idea, and bought him a Dyane 6, on the basis that surely he wouldn't crash that.

Big mistake........
New Driver - 42 years and counting ...
Highway Code, Annex 3 applies:

Learner drivers

Learners driving a car MUST hold a valid provisional licence. They MUST be supervised by someone at least 21 years old who holds a full EC/EEA licence for that type of car (automatic or manual) and has held one for at least three years.
Law MV(DL)R reg 16

Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).
Law MV(DL)R reg 16 & sched 4

You MUST pass the theory test (if one is required) and then a practical driving test for the category of vehicle you wish to drive before driving unaccompanied.
Law MV(DL)R reg 40

There is NO limitation to the size of the engine for a car, the weight is limited to 3000kg and it must not be able to carry more than 8 passengers (the test must be conducted in the type of vehicle for which the license is to apply).

Unlike for motorcycles where the power output is restricted. The Direct.Gov page at snipurl.com/lqw8 states:

"A learner motorcycle has an engine up to 125 cc and a power output not exceeding 11 kW"

Do not fancy towing an electric fire behind a motorbike.

Seems some things never change. When I was 17, which was back in 1991, the same rumours were going round that they were going to raise the minimum driving age to 18, in line with most European countries. No idea how these rumours start. My brother, who turned 17 a couple of years ago, had exactly the same.

Another question on this thread.
Does he have to have a car to get insured?.
Sounds stupid but can we add him to our insurance whilst he learns to drive before he slapped bigtime for insurance for his own car when he gets one ?
New Driver - Adam {P}
Yes.
New Driver - bedfordrl
Thank you.
New Driver - Adam {P}
Sorry I was a little short and besides which you answered two questions.

No he doesn't need his own car and yes you can name him on your policy.
New Driver - Adam {P}
Asked damnit not answered.

I'm going to bed!
