Reading through a few posts, why is it that the middle pedal in a car is often referred to as the "break" pedal and the thing that picks up a radio signal an "ariel"?
And those trips up to the airport in Essex? It's STANSTED, not Stanstead!
Anyone else spotted a regular spelling mistake oft repeated here?

I like Duel Carriageway. It?s kind of Freudien.

Perhaps they have been copying the Ford website.
When looking at the optional rear spoiler for the old Focus, it commented on the break light.
Spill checkers are so grate these days!

I'm prepared to forgive the odd typo (easy done, especially without the conspicuously absent EDIT button), but there do seem to be one or two posters who have yet to find the shift and comma keys. Or perhaps they just don't know what they're for...

If it's anything like where I work...
The forum has a clear equal-oppurtunities policy and welcomes persons of all ability groups and celebrates their diversity.
Seriously though, most other forums are far worse on the spelling and grammar front.

To be sung to the RecordBreakers theme:
´Punctuation,
Woo-oo, punctuation.
Punctuation, that´s what you need.
If I´m gonna read your post,
Help me understand the most.
Woo-oo, punctuation´s what you need´.

That sounds like an example of "management-speak", a term which I understand has now been included in the OED.

Alpha Romeo is inexcusable. Seen that once or twice.

Definately is definitely wrong, but I try to forgive grammatical and spelling errors. I know I'm not perfect myself.

loose = lose, independant = independent, there = their = they are,
your = you are, lead = led, piece = peace, definate = definite, etc.

Posters asking for "advise" and then "loose" rather then lose.

Dalglish beat me to it. That's another, "to" should be "too".

To drag to this to motoring, I once rode in a Jenson Interceptor that had a "break" pedal.
It broke when the bulkhead and pedal box gave way (rust) at approx 90mph. The driver managed to slow the cars rapid progress by traveling over a roundabout (devoid of any street furniture in those days) and up a rather steep hill.

And of course HJ who spells almost every make and model of car as "Ford Mondeo Ghia" when he really meant to suggest another vehicle as the solution to someone's car dilemma ;-)

I'm thinking of a word but I'm not sure if it ends with one S or two !!!!

Hear, hear.....when poser really means here, here.

If you mean as in the phrase used by politicians, then that IS hear hear.

the problem is some of us can and some can't. so long as it's understandable does it really matter my punctuation is terrible but my spelling is pretty good . i am fairly well educated but punctuation is like double dutch to me . as you will see i do try but often get it wrong . i usually avoid responding on threads like this as there are some that think it is a crime deserving of capital punishment. some of this countries greatest acheivers have problems with writing... Richard Branson i believe is one. ...cheers...keo.

Its should be "Miss Steaks"
That would be grammar, surely?
And only applies if it's Misss as opposed to Mrs, rather than miss as opposed to hit.
Oh God. Now I'm doing it...

I stand corrected but on certain occasions 'here, here' is acceptable as in this article:

I can't spell, find punctuation a black art infact was diagnosed with a form of dislexia at the age of 40.(had it all my life) I mix numbers & repeatedly make the same spelling mistakes & have to check over & over to spot the problem
This is worring as a big part of my job is ordering large quantities of spare parts with large part numbers!
My main point of answering this thread was the text generation seem to be using txt speak in emails and letters so all us over a certain age will have learn a new language

Most of my spelling mistakes are typing ones - just carelessness.
Not exactly a spelling mistake, but the great British Public has a habit of talking about Robin Reliants, rather than Reliant Robins - why?
Cheers, SS
|
I thought it was only me that noticed that! I heard a comedian on a stand-up show the other night allude to his ownership of an "Austin Metro Princess". Is this the thin end of the wedge? : )

That's not a mistake, it's a correction! Everyone knows that the surname comes last in normal speech. It's just seeing "Blair, Anthony" and saying "Tony Blair" (OK, in that case most people would utter a few expletives, but yaknowwhatimean)

mrmender,
looks good to me. Most of the stuff I read at work is illiterate. If I could get emails and reports of the quality you've just provided I'd be very happy. I think most of the errors people make are because they don't read what they write.
And if there's any typos, that's the cat walking on the keyboard!
