Much to the amusement of friends and family, I'm a bit of a 'nerd' when it comes to MPG calculations and I like to keep a spreadsheet showing my progress. Not only does this give me a clue to the general health of my vehicle but I'm nerdy enough to actually get some entertainment out of manipulating the numbers (stop laughing). For example, i've just plotted a rather interesting graph showing the change in the cost of fuel over three years. What I would like to know is what kind of information you like to extract from your spreadsheet?

I do the same, the key information being the rolling annual average consumption, i.e. average consumption over the previous 12 months at any point in time.

You are not alone....I also note brand of fuel, type of journeys etc so I can potentially detect dodgy fuel (one case) and other driving patterns.
As I share a car with swmbo can also detect driver patterns but I usually come off worse there!

My spreadsheet tells me:
Last fill mpg
Last 1000 miles mpg
Overall mpg
Estimated date of next service (based on current rate of miles per day)
Running cost per mile (currently 19.6p/mile)
Total cost of ownership (currently 69p/mile)
Estimated mileage at which tyres need changing
|
My spreadsheet tells me:
Total cost of ownership (currently 69p/mile)
It's nice to see somebody calculating the true cost of running a car. Most people only consider the cost of fuel.

Gengis.
My nerd head is twitching trying to get out now, but not being very experienced with excel how do you construct a sheet to give all that info?
|
|
|
I calculate the average fuel consumption for each month and then plot it against date and odometer reading. The fuel consumption varies with the season and with the total mileage.

When I did this with a K reg Mondeo, I was surprised by how much fuel consumption reacted to a service. I worked out that half the price of a service was paid back in fuel savings.

I have tracked my Mondeo over 101k miles on an Excel spreadsheet calculating pence per mile and mpg monthly, I will have to total the monthly averages to get an overall mpg over 101k miles sometime.
|
I'm nerdy enough to keep a running average of mpg over the last 7 fill ups, as well as most of the data already mentioned in this thread, plus amount spent on fuel per tax year.
I've even toyed with the idea of bunging it all in an excel pivit table so I can plot more or les sanything against anything else...

I have to own up to membership as well.
Biggest influences on fuel consumption (both for the better) - cross-europe trip and school holidays
Go on, get out of the car...

For AR-coolC
If you let me have your e-mail address I will send you a copy of my spreadsheet. You may then be able to work out how some of it functions. Nothing too complicated on it but too difficult to explain here.

Sorry AR-coolC. Don't know what you mean

The sound your PC should have made, as I've just sent you an e-mail.

I kept one for my Citroen XM 10 years ago on a Casio organiser thingy. The data lasted for 110K miles but I didn't learn much from the exercise. It did the same 45 mpg when I sold it as when I bought it.

I don't bother with servicing charges as it's done on a time-dependant basis so I can't really help the cost of that!
Mine tells me pence per mile, miles per day, fuel economy to date, mpg.
I'm currently looking at doing 60 on motorways (car's only got 5-speed gearbox) now that they've finished the M42 roadworks! 46MPG on last tank.

I think you are probably right Chris M ;-)
I'm glad I'm not alone though, cheers for the replies folks.

I can see you all frowning as you think "what's he on about?". Car's only got a 4-speed gearbox!

General gist of this message and others, which was that some people are not interested in such stats, doesn't need repeating over and over...
