When was the box last serviced?
Sounds like insufficient pressure to formulate movement.

That "malfunctioning" snowflake button is telling you the gaerbox has gone into limp home mode. When this happens the gearbox remains in 3rd gear which is why your car feels sluggish.
To be pedantic for a moment, it's actually the light to tell you when sports mode has been selcted, but it also doubles up as a fault light. The snowflake is actualy the button down by the gearstick itself, but doesn't light up.

:Pedantic mode off again:

You need someone with a fault code reader (more than likely a Tech1 reader) to diagnose what the problem is. In the meantime you should still be able to use the gearbox manually until you get it fixed.

From memory it does have a light. Comes on dimly when not in use, but becomes brighter when pressed to indicate that snow mode has been engaged.

I *think* you can find the fault code yourself by shorting out the relevant pins in the ecu diagnostic socket in the fusebox.

The info on how to do that is here, about half way down the page:-
