I am planning a trip back to France since my Renault will soon need its 18K service so I thought I would combine it with a holiday and see family etc.

Now that P&O have pulled out of Portsmouth to Le Havre, I was wondering what the ldlines operator were like with their one service a day. Otherwise I was thinking of driving over to Dover and going on Sea France or even the tunnel.

Britanny are still running if you really want to go from Portsmouth.

Speedferries is my answer to eveything now though, just bought a 10 ticket (5 return) package from them, usable over 2 years, for £190.

Does this apply even in the 'main' weeks ?

Yes it does; I bought my 10 crossings in Dcember for £190 and have just booked crossings for a 4 day break in January and our 2 week summer holiday in July. All my first choice dates and times were available. The only limitation (if it is one) is that each booking you make from your prepurchased 10, must be either with the car you register or the main passenger contact.

Addendum to what Neil says - I had some cheap pre-purchased tickets for Speedferries last year. However they are not always ideal for purpose, if your purpose is to suddenly decide you fancy a weekend away (like I have done - Thursday lunchtime I decide I'm off on Thursday afternoon...) Their boats tend to be fairly well booked so I once or twice had difficulty getting a suitable crossing. Therefore book well in advance to get the dates/times you want.

I don't know if they are any good but they are prohibitively expensive. I live 20 miles from the ferry port, and my father less than half a mile, but we both always end up driving to Dover simply because of the pricing. Even taking account of petrol costs it still makes it worthwhile.

Thanks for the replies.
Brittany Ferries is a non starter, when I got a quote from them a while back, they were more than P&O at the time.
It's a bit of a nuisance because from my home is near Bath, and destination not far from Aubusson in Central France, so I'm doing two sides of a triangle if I go Dover. But the fares from Speedferries and Sea France are so attractive that it makes the extra driving worth while.

A Pound is better off in my pocket than someone elses, as my Grandmother taught me...

Speedferries are very good, but finding the correct dock in Boulogne is rather tricky. At one stage I had 3 cars following me as I went round in circles, one driver said he was following me!

...if you struggled with Boulogne, do NOT use Norfolk Lines. Dunkirk is a nightmare...
