As already mentioned somewhere on this site, be sure its a braked dolly otherwise you are under the unbraked ruling as a 750kg max.

Thanks for the replies lads.

An "A" frame is very unlikely to have brakes;a towing dolly(front wheels off the ground might have). Most of these are able to be used because the police don't understand the law either. The only way to be 100% legal is to spend a bit more and use a trailer.
Even if you use a trailer with brakes, you have be sure you don't go over the capacity of safe max. 100% of the vehicle doing the towing.
Such as having a Focus to tow a Range Rover on trailer or dolly.
Should be ok safety wise, its a 406 pulling an XR2i.
Depending on how far you have to tow the XR2 and if you have a driver for it, have you thought of a straight bar you can get from Halfords and Argos as these were used by the RAC and AA before they started using 'A' frames. They fold up, so you can keep it in the boot as an Emergency.
im not sure if you are aware but if the towed vehicle has any wheels on the ground then it is alledgedlly liable for road tax mot and insurance as it is seen by the constabulary as a broken down vehicle being transported for repairs.I strongly suggest you hire a brenderup car transporter trailer or equivalent or pay a company to deliver it for you, they usually charge a £1 a mile
