hi guys, i run a astra 1.6 16v with 56k on the clock, it burns some oil, im using castrol gtx magnetec 10/40 semi sinthetic i change my oil every 5,000mls or every 6mths, would changing up to a thicker oil like 15/40 cause any problems? my driving is mainly stop start driving, it drops about half the dipstick about 1000mls.

it drops about half the dipstick about 1000mls.
IIRC, dipstick measurement between min and max is 1 litre (although I have come across some Vauxhall's where it's 750 ml)
Anyway, sounds like yours is using something like 500 ml of oil per 1000 miles. From memory, Vaux engines can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles before it's classed as knackered.
Personally I wouldn't worry about it.
Oh, and as for the oil - try Vauxhall's own brand 10w/40 semi synth. You'll probably find it's cheaper than the Magnatec that you're currently using.

Swapping to a 15/40 won't make a scrap of difference. It has the same hot viscosity as a 10/40 has it not?
As for consumption rate in the engine specification pages of my Astra handbook it indicates an oil consumption of 0.6 litre per 1000 km (1 litre/1000 miles) is to be expected - and that's for new cars, never mind well used ones. So, on that basis, as DD says you've nothing to worry about.

yes vauxhall oil is a lot cheaper! that will go in next time.

Be careful Vauxhalls have a habit of not reading correctly at first to gain a correct reading leave overnight

Only the Diesel engines. Shouldn't be a problem with petrol engined Vauxhalls.

Keep with the 10w40. The oil consumption is identical to my Astra 1.6 16v that I ran from 26k to 90k.
