My 2002 Passat diesel after about 30 secs after switching on ignition ( engine running or not) flashes the "glow plug " warning light and the message "engine workshop" appears , the glow plug light keeps flashing , the car starts and seems to run as normal except for the flashing light ?? Any ideas?

It has / has had a problem that is now logged in memory. Needs to be taken to a garage with a VAG.com or similar diagnostic tool.

Check that your brake lights are working! Sounds crazy but it's a well known problem. A failed brake light switch sends a message to the engine management system. Lots of postings on this forum about this problem.

If it is the brake light buy one from VW and not local Motor Factor,subtle differences.
