Even on my crusty BMW 320d the recommended oil change interval is 13000 miles-plus, and on newer models, much longer.
Seems to me like a big 'ask' on the oil, although these diesels use a fully synthetic oil (not cheap). Is there a serious benefit in inserting an extra change e.g. at the half way point?

If you do a forum search you will find this has been covered in depth on several occasions. The conclusion is pretty much that yes it is worthwhile changing the oil early if you intend to keep the car for more than just a couple of years.
