I have read the Honest John Backroom off and on for a few years and am struck by the generally responsible attitude of its contributors. No one here ever drives with fog lights on unnecessarily, or holds a mobile phone whilst driving, or drink-drives, or sits in traffic with their brake lights on, etc.
As the HJ board is widely read and we are all so considerate and law abiding, just who are these bad drivers?
Any ideas?

Quite obvious really. Those who don't belong here;)

Sorry...........I have been guilty of 2 n 4........... and much more besides!!!

Yes - I confess I have used my mobile on the move in a non bluetooth car in work.
Yes - I did pull out in front of a motorcylist that got lost in the "clutter" of other headlights (in my own car)on a roundabout.
Yes - I admit to having a buzz out of outdragging a hot hatch driven by a pimply youth on a local roundabout.
Yes - I regularly break speed limits (on de-restricted roads)
So obviously I am a bad driver.

Freely admit to, erm "loosing it" to those idiots who think that the "priority to oncoming vehicles" sign on a bridge near me, somehow doesn't apply to them.
...now where are those tablets?....

Bad Drivers are generally People who think they are good drivers.

Erm. I'm one! I clobbered a kerb yesterday through not concentrating going around a corner, then nearly pulled out in front of a car overtaking a bus.
Then, I did the 300 mile trip home late at night in one go at about 80MPH, and then took malicious satisfaction in seeing a chavved up car pull out to overtake me just before we entered the Bristol contraflow and nearly take out about 20 cones before he skidded, swerved, and pulled in behind me again. (Lanes 2 and 3 were closed and he hadn't seen the signs...)
He did, however, indicate to show that he was awake before driving off the road.

That'll be the other 99.9% of drivers! It's very rare to a driver on the roads that isn't driving like an idiot.

Like beauty, bad driving is in the eye of the beholder.

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw years ago.
Woman at wheel of a car, kids stacked up inside.
Little girl asks: "Mummy, why do you never see any of the idiots and retarded morons who Daddy manages to spot on the roads?"

Mummy spends her time talking to the little ones, and not concentrating on road;) not actually far from the truth though!

the woman in the 206 on the A1 tonight who overtook me, then slowed down, decided she wanted my lane, forcing me to brake and avoid.
when I overtook her she was driving with a map in one hand, and using the light from her mobile phone in the other to illuminate the map.

Drivers who drive at 40mph for 40 miles without pulling in to let anyone pass!
Usual suspects are elderly drivers and tractor drivers. The latter in particular, show a deplorable lack of courtesy. They seldom signal appropriately (usually because trailer lights are broken or disconnected) They seldom have a rear numberplate that matches the tractor. They don't switch on their lights in poor weather conditions, but at night insist on driving forwards with 4 bright white lights blazing out from behind - totally blinding traffic coming behind, or even giving the terrifying impression that a vehicle is approaching on the wrong side of the road!I could go on about unstable loads, mess flying out from the rear wheels etc etc.
And of course the crowning glory is that they are paying cheap road tax and running on red diesel.
Sorry if I've offended any farmers on the forum - and yes, I have come across the very small minority who are courteous, considerate and safety conscious but the next time you're out in the country, check tractors and see how many 'offences' they are perpetrating.

As a farmer/peasant I would have to agree with most of C5's comments on tractor drivers - a high proportion of them are inconsiderate to other road users, which gives us all a bad reputation. His point about the rear numberplate, however, is invalid - it is legal to display the plate of any tractor that you own, therefore all my trailers have the same plate.
Although it can be irritating when a tractor won't pull over to let traffic past, please realise that on a very busy road it can take ages for us to get back on again - sometimes if you only have a mile or so to go, it is tempting to keep going! Don't forget that we are doing a job, often under great time pressure as the agricultural workforce reduces rapidly. This is by no means an excuse for those idiots who hold up scores of vehicles for miles on end.
Although red diesel is relatively cheap, the Chancellor has his beady eye on it , and has increased duty considerably over the last few budgets - the price to us has tripled in four years, largely due to movements in oil prices, but not helped by our 'prudent' friend in number 11!
Finally I would like to wish all backroomers seasonal greetings - now leave the computer and talk to your family!!

We all make driving mistakes ...... but I reckon we BRoomers try to learn from them.

Locally we have just had a an extreme case of bad driving - a hit-and-run by a man who'd never held a licence or taken a test because he was medically unfit (eyesight). He was doing 60 mph in a 30 zone and accelerating hard when he hit and killed a pedestrian. He's starting a 4 year jail sentence - not long enough.
Cheers, SS
|
How come he could have had a licence but get 10 years if he were drunk, yet he was doing twice the speed limit, licence..less and blind and he only gets 4?
What a joke.
|
Hmmm, could be misinterpreted as bad taste, so it's gone.

Driving through Woking yesterday, the driver in the next lane was talking on the phone, getting a notepad out of his pocket whilst driving with his elbows then noting something down.
As I pulled alongside I gave him my hardest "tssk tssk" stare. You'd expect better standards from plod in his company Volvo estate!

deleted, as the post it responds to has also gone.

Sorry - wasn't aware that was the case! Interesting.

I will admit to some bad habits. When I used to smoke I would regularly light up while driving. Also I used to take phone calls on the move. And anyone going slower than me was a fool and anyone going faster was an idiot. I now don't smoke, leave phone calls and don't care what speed others drive.
