I never cease to be amazed by the number of vehicles that have earthing faults that cause rear lights, brake lights and rear indicators to do weird things. Don't the vehicle owners ever check their rear lights? If the lights don't operate correctly they don't convey the right message, so they can be meaningless to other road users.

I think this is another of those faults (like a blown light bulb!) that only gets picked up at M.O.T. these days...

Ford Fiestas used to be a favourite for this, in fact come to think of it, Escorts and Sierras also suffered.
|
Renault 19s and the original meganes also seem to flash anything as they get older.

On Monday I told my sister's husband that only 1 of the 3 brake lights were working on their Honda CRV. His reply was, "It's due for an MoT shortly, they'll sort it." Not that he is incapable, he's an accomplished joiner and DIY type. I suspect his attitude is that of the majority. No, I don't check my lights. No, I can't be bothered to fix them if they need it.

Your BiL must never look at the dashboard. In my experience, if a brake light fails on a Honda about three warning lights come on all the time to let you know!

Unless of course they've failed as well.

I almost smacked into the back of a Sierra because his brake lights were virtually reduced to a dim glow by a bad earth.

I've been surprised to see a couple of newish VWs do this. Made me wonder if the aquarium boots reported on here had anything to do with it?

Although not an earthing issue, but more of a loose socket, are Vectras Mk1 and facelift Mk1. Each rear lamp unit has two sidelights - one combined with the brakelight dual filament, and a separate 5w lamp on the outside edge of the unit.
Have you noticed the number of Vectras where these outer lights are out? I checked mine and sure enough these bulbs were not working, but a little tap and hey presto, working again!
|
Pug 206s seem to suffer from 'brake lights on all the time' syndrome which I imagine must be a badly adjusted brake pedal pressure switch.
|
Some one talked about three rear lights being out.My car has two rear light bulbs each side.If one fails will it pass or fail MOT?.
1.Car must exhibit rear light each side.PASS
2.All lights fitted must be working. FAIL.
I suppose it dependa on the tester.

It's not really a matter of adjustment. RHD 206's still have their brake light switches in the passenger footwell. [Well; why should they be bothered to move it over for "Le Rost-Biffs!"]
Consequently; if anyone with larger than size 6 shoes sits in the passenger seat of a 206; they can easily knock the switch off it's flimsy mounting.
It's a piece of cake to clip it back in; so, if you're looking for a good way to ingratiate yourself with a nice piece of totty in a 206....

nobodies mentioned the village idiot with chaved up saxo/corsa or the man that has to get everywhere first, these people always have to get in front no matter what the cost and then as soon as they pass they have to brake and guess what?because of their style of driving they invariably have a brake bulb out due to them always being on.

I fitted additional earths to the rear lights of my Sierra and both Cortinas before that. I certainly have seen many Sierras with bad rear lights.

Speaking of earthing cortinas, back in my youth, I fitted a pair of fibreglass front wings to my mk3 and wondered why the indicators wouldn't work after. There was only one wire to each, the live. They were earthed through the body of the lamp to the metal wings, DOH !
I saw a G-reg Motorhome the other day with, almost white, pink brake lights.
