Toyota do a 1.4 D4D MMT Corolla and i think the new 2.2 D4D avensis will be available at some point as an auto.

The Japanese import version of the Space cruiser was always a diesel automatic, but i dont think HJ was very keen on them!!
A reletive of mine had one, it was very comfortable, but although it was on an F-plate the insurance was quite steep, despite he then wrote it off when a minicab went into the side of it. After that it started to rust like anything!!

Will also be a new Yaris D-4D 89PS with MMT, though not a torque converter auto.
This is the same engine and box as used in the Corolla, hopefully in the Yaris it will feel a bit more lively as it's quite sluggish in the bigger heavier corolla.

Quite surprising given the rising percentage of diesels in Europe. Even Lexus' new diesel IS 220D is only shown as automatic - TBC.

I presume you mean IS220 is only shown as manual? This is the higher powered version of the Avensis 2.2D4D although at some point the Avensis will also get the more powerful engine.

I don't think it is that surprising.
The main advantages of an oil burner are economy and the high torque giving good acceleration at low revs.
A 'conventional' automatic gearbox on a diesel usually has much higher consumption than the equivalant manual version - as much as 25% higher according to HJ.
Given the high torque at low revs is of no use in an auto box(simply causes more torque convertor slip) the main advantages of a diesel are to a certain extent negated.
