I wonder if anyone could offer an opinion/advice please?
I have an Escort diesel van 'S' reg non turbo and you'd swear I was carrying 5 tons in the back! Some hills are no go areas as there is such a severe lack of power.
I went to a local garage who suspected it was going to cost £300 to repair. I heard some muttering of a pressure pump as I was getting up off the floor.
Can this be right? And is there any way of adjusting it?
I believe its either a bosch or lucas but not really sure.
Many thanks in asdvance

My did had two of these when working in his last job. An old 'K' reg one and a later 'S' registered one like yours. Unfortunately, he too found performance somewhat lackluster, dreadful in fact. I drove the older one and although only carrying half load (at most) slight motorway inclines proved hard work. Pushing the pedal into the rubber matting proved a fruitless effort too. It could therefore be just a characteristic of these units.
Has always been like this, or has gradually got worse?
In the case of may dads vans, it was thought by those who serviced it, that the throttle link to the pump had been adjusted (or something similar) so that it would pass it MOT. May be worth a check?

Thanks for your reply.
It sounds like a very similar problem...did he also get JCB drivers whizzing past him?
It has always been this way but it seems to be getting even worse these days but I really can't accept that there's nothing wrong...no vehicle should be as sluggish as this.

sorry, forgot to mention, only 100k miles so shouldn't be worn out surely?

Could it be a 'cooked' accelerator cable? I ask cos I had a 306TD which felt like this, but changing the cable made a huge difference to both performance and the effort required on the pedal. Mind you when the fault recurred 3 years later a liberal dose of WD40 cured it with no recurrence.

Might be incorrect injection timing (job for Ford dealer or diesel specialist) or the EGR valve could be sticking open.
Wouldn't do any harm to have injectors serviced at that mileage.

You could experiment by advancing the fuel injection pump timing slightly, then taking it for a run to see if their's any difference in the performance.May be cheaper in the long run.
