Would like a T5 Volvo. The ones in my price range have done around 80k miles with Volvo history. Is this a concern and if looked after could I happily run one to 150k miles ?
Thanks.

No concearn. Yes, it should go to 150k without too much trouble. Those more qualified will probably confirm this.

Suspension can wear a bit on higher mileage ones but generally these cars are about as good as it gets. Barely run in at 80K.

Thanks confirming what I thought. Now to find a good one for £7kish. Should I also look at the 2.4T as these are available for £6k ! Seem somewhat of a bargain.

I tried both and had the dosh for either (in a V70) but chose the 2.4T over the T5 as the power delivery is much more progressive with instant 'go' from just under 2000RPM and upwards. The T5 is great when in you're in the mood to wring its neck, but the 2.4T is a more able every day companion and in the real world is not a lot slower.

What exactly would one get for 6k in a V70 2.4T. Main dealer although I believe they are too expensive or private?

best regards, Martin D.

T5's can be quite a cheap used buy. Have a look at the classified section of the voc for examples.

watch out for suspension, throttle bodies, air con problems (very expensive).
engine mounts go but are cheap/easy fix.
easy tuning by chipping.

miles not a problem - you might want to be carefull of ex-police ones - lots about, mixed results.

My good friend has a 2000 V70 T5 (Last of the 850 shape) bought as an ex-demo at a few months old. Currently on just under 160K with no significant problems having had full main dealer service history. Still a very expensive car to run though, ordinary things like a set of tyres, brake discs and pads that all cars need is big money and a T5 needs them more often! You do get a lot of pleasure for your expenditure, but no good if you're on a strictly tight budget.

Check Volvo owners club website high mileage club. 150k? A big Volvo is hardly run in at that...I bought one with 160k and kept it years. Some bloke in the states has over a million miles on his volvo with the service history to prove it!

I'm glad this thread has come up. I'm still considering either a 2.4T or a T5 S60 but had read some horror stories about them which put me off. (Along the lines of falling to bits at 100K). Re-checking what I've read, it seems to be only the diesel ones suffering this problem.

Is this true?
1V70,S70,S60T5 mileage concerns ? - Xileno {P}
I read somewhere that the diesel injectors can play up as the mileage gets higher and are expensive to replace.

The injectors! I was trying to think what it was specifically and I coudlnt' remember. I've heard figures of £1000 plus.

Just got back from Sweden and noticed that most taxis (V70 and 9-5) are petrol. Is there a problem with Volvo and Saab's diesel engines?
1V70,S70,S60T5 mileage concerns ? - pd
Assuming we're talking post-2000 they can do decent mileages but suspension gets a bit saggy, wheels bearings can fail at sub 60k, engines can get a bit rough (exaggerated by a problem on early models of the exhaust downpipe being bolted to the body and causing resonance) and auto gearboxes can develop a lot of driveline shunt.

To be honest my last V70 (a 170bhp 2.4 SE Y-reg example) felt utterly knackered by 70k. Later models are better as a lot of running changes were made after Ford took over. My current 2005 D5 feels much tighter (at 13k) than the 170 did when it was new.

They're nice enough cars but be aware they are built down to a price which shows though in some of the materials, components and design. Many do seem to run to high miles so I reckon a well looked after 03 model on with 80k shouldn't be too bad.

No offence intended, but I am often amused by comments that various cars are 'just run in at so-many miles', or will 'easily do X00,000 miles'. I wonder how much experience of buying/selling/repairing high mileage cars some of these people have?
The most "worn" 100k mile car I ever looked at was a Volvo. The guy had just bought it (!) and asked me to look over it - I pulled off the oil filler with the engine running and a plume of blow-by gas came streaming out. The owner was totally gobsmacked and couldn't believe that a Volvo engine could have serious blowby at just over 100k. It was verfied mileage too - with a FSH. I suspect the car had been fitted with slightly under-size pistons from manufacture (it does happen).

I think the moral is take nothing for granted and don't be lulled into a false sense of security by a 'prestige' brand name.
With the consolidation of component suppliers, that 'prestige' car will likely have ancilliary components like alternators, radiators, air con, steering rack, dampers, etc made by the same companies and to the same spec as the bits that go to make Vectras and Mondeos. Moreover, although engines are very durable these days, and most well-serviced units will last 150k+, there are a lot of other parts in a car that tend to wear out irrespective of whether it does short journeys or long journeys. Unless you can DIY then you can be hit by large and unexpected bills.

I'm not saying that Volvos are not good and durable cars, but treat every example on its individual merits and take nothing for granted, even if it is a 1-owner FSH car.

To balance:

I've worked in Sweden on average something like once a month for the past three years, and not quite so frequently for the six years before that; nearly every one of the many taxis I've used for the past few years has been a V70, S80, or XC90. The remainder have been Merc E class, usually diesel.

Probably 90% of the Volvos have been diesel (mostly D5 but some the older Audi diesel) with the remainder being LPG 2.4. I'm writing mainly about experience from Linkoping and Goteborg, but LPG appears even more popular amongst taxi ranks in other areas of Sweden I've worked in.

£1200-£1500
Specifically, the first year of D5 production (2002 model year) is affected.

Hi,

I can't comment on 150k miles, but I had an 52 plate S60 D5 auto which I returned at the end of it's 3 year lease with 60k. I had some minor electrical problems with the cruise control. I was thinking of buying it at the end of the lease, but the suspension/steering felt tired, and the car was getting lazy at starting ( a sign of diesel injector problem) and I wanted 4wd for towing. Otherwise the car was fine. I was generally happy with the ownership and have now leased an XC70 D5 auto.

Other than some suspension work, and possible diesel injector problem I reckon it would have gone to 150k easy.

Hope this helps.
