Ebay CD player for a 2002 Vauxhall Astra - Carl2
I should like to buy a CD player from ebay to upgrade the current casette/radio I have in a 2002 Astra (dash display and steering wheel controls). What concerns me is that most are supplied with the code but no mention of a manual. When I first bought this car it took me ages to workout how to enter the code Etc and I don`t think I would have managed it without the handbook. Can this info be easily obtained from another source? or is it not worth buying without the handbook?

IMO,I would not buy anything that did not come with a manual.
even though I suspect you could get info needed here, but you didnt state what you are after?

The instructions for entering the codes on Vauxhall stereo's is pretty much the same throughout the range. Viewing any one of the manuals in the link below should tell you how to do it.

That aside, if the stereo's on ebay don't come with manuals, then there's a possibility they've been half hinched from someone else's motor. If you can live with that, then fine. But at the end of the day all you're creating is a buyers market, and the next stereo they steal could well be yours to sell next time on ebay!!

I think 2002 were DIN1 rather than the DIN2 sizes ones on the current models, so you can get VDO radios new on ebay, many of these state that they are compatible with the screen and wheel buttons as VDO made the original radios (or VDO clones)
If you get a Vauxhall one ask that the fron face is secure, a lot of second hand ones seem to have broken clips in one corner.

The "Audio Manual", part of the documentation pack provided with each new Vauxhall, gives operating instructions for each type of unit fitted to your generic model. The manual can be ordered from a Vauxhall dealer.

The factory-fit CD changer takes up nearly all the space in the glove-box and the glove-box has different mouldings to accomodate it.

I must admit I'm not 100% sure on this but didn't Vauxhall start matching a specific stereo to a specific ECU a few years back? Not sure how much a dealer charges to re-match the ECU to the new stereo.? Worth chekcing with your local dealer before splashing out on the stereo I reckon.

Carl should be OK with his 2002 model, which has the 'single DIN' size radio, although I believe you could be right with later cars. Just swapped the factory radio/cassette in my 2002 Astra for a VDO radio/CD unit. Bought it of the 'net (£40 less than Vx wanted) and it plugged straight in - yes, these cars don't have the connectors on flying leads - they are fixed in the back of the radio aperture! Came in a plain box including the Opel part number, works the remote display, and responds to the steering wheel controls.

John S. Main dealer quoted me £190 for a basic CD. I only require something that will play the odd CD and allow me to listen to radio 2. This is why I thought of ebay. An £85 Halfords cd would probably be more than good enough for me if only it was compatible with the display. I,am assuming you paid about £150 for yours? Thanks to all for your information supplied.

Yep £140 ish for VDO CD441XED from lowcostcaraudio.co.uk

£180 on the Vx website.

Like you I wanted compatability with the car.

Not the cheapest or the most stylish, but works well, drives the display and works with the remotes. So easy to fit it was untrue. Done in 15 minutes. I've no complaints, and, importantly, neither has my wife who uses the car more than me!

After reading Dynamic Daves reply. I wonder if I did buy something that was stolen would I have any way to claim? Oh and by the way Dave living with it would not be fine with me.

Sorry to drag this thread on a bit, but it would seem to me that the fact that a radio is purchased with a security code counts for nothing and that to purchase such an item is perpetuating crime. Is there any fact to back this up? Am I being naieve in believing codes were only available to people who could provide some proof of ownership?

It costs between 5 or 10 pounds for a radio decode, so even with a code they could be nicked.

I upgraded the wifes (clio) stereo from e-bay, but it came from an audio dealer who had done a fitted upgrade,

You can but one from a car audio delaer direct and get various types of leads and adpators to make the display/steering controls work
