I've had a fabia tdi, great little car to drive. Just found that the seat adjustment lever used to did into the back of my left leg, but that's because of my gangly build and unusual driving position.

Road test on the Carkeys website describes the VRS as "Fast But Flawed", criticising the handling and ride quality. (I'll not provide a link 'cos it's a rival site, but it's a .co.uk URL)

Hi. If you're looking at the new model, there is a group test in the current What Car (marked January 2006). It's compared with the Golf GTI and the Focus ST and the Skoda comes out on top. Their verdict: Brilliant all-rounder, delivering electric performance, thrilling handling and value for money."

I've got a silver VrS so I can gice you my impressions.
I bought the car for my daily commute of 20 miles on the M60 - in this regard it is almost a perfect little car. Most times it's just me in the car, it is powerful, fairly quite and frugal. I am averaging 50mpg. At a steady 65-70mph I get nearer 60mpg. I have never had any less than 43mpg (that includes when being thrashed and sittig in traffic). The ride quality is surpisingly smooth despite the low profile tyres.
I also have a Subaru Outback (new style) 2,5 and the ride quality of the VrS compares well for such a different vehicle.
The handling is standard VAG fare - ie, a bit stodgy, but very, very steady at speed (ie. not fidgety) and grippy but then I have never seen this an Impreza Turbo-style handler.
The mid-range grunt from the 130bhp Tdi engine is fantastic in such a small vehicle and it just takes a mere whiff of the throttle to suddenly be in danger of a camera flash. On the otherhand it is a lovely little car to drive sedately feeling solid, secure and from a size above it's class.
The overall build and interior quality are first class for this price of car - all I need is standard, eg air con, CD, traction control - and the Sports seats are fantastic for me (I am 5'5' - so the dimensions of the VrS suit me perfectly !)
I've covered 7000 fault free miles, used little oil and can see a gradual improvement (not that one is needed) in mpg.
I change cars fairly often but the VrS covers so many angles that I can't think of a car for the momey that would replace it.
Fast, frugal, sensible, reasonably interesting, well built ....... pretty good reasons for buying one in my book !

My brother has one, and as others have mentioned it has very useful mid-range shove.
However his has just had a front wheel bearing replaced at only 14k miles and the fuse for the wipers went the other morning leaving him without wash or wipe.
Both of these faults seem quite common given a read of the briskoda forums.
They are quick cars and undoubtedly great fun, but VW reliabilty? My brothers experience leaves me in doubt. I have a 306 TD that I have driven hard for over 5 years (>115k miles). It has yet to require suspension components and it has never let me down..
