I have a P reg mondeo TD 1.8
I have not owned a diesel car before and I am going to change the oil. What diesel oil should I get for this time of year.
Normal, part Synthetic or fully Synthetic?
Can some also tell me what the difference is and does changing it do any damage to the engine?
Cheers

For this age of vehicle, using synthetic will be a waste. It will be far better to regularly change your oil (every 4-6 months), using a decent quality basic oil, as recommended in the handbook or by Ford dealer.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Agreed, a basic oil changed regularly will suit these old low tech engines.

Absolutely agree in a car of this age and type use a good quality normal oil and change it every 3 to 4 k and you should have no probs
Synthetic is a waste for most engines just change the oil more regular and it has the same effect and it's usualy cheaper especialy with the quantities modern diesel sumps take on average around 8 to 9 liters. When in the past 5 liters was a good average

"modern diesel sumps take on average around 8 to 9 liters."
Blimey, what kind of truck do you drive!!?? Had diesels for nearly 20 years and never had one that takes that much!! Usually buy 5 lires and a little left to top up if necessary (not usually needed).
I would say that 3 to 4 k is also a bit more than necessary - 5 k is a nice round figure to remember. But 3 to 4 is certainly not going to do any harm!

Given it's a turbo engine, I would always use a semi synthetic oil. My TDs have always run quieter and seemed to have more urge running on 10W-40 semi synth oil. Just make sure it meets the B3 (I think...) diesel spec, so it collects the soot (most good oils meet this spec now - it's only a few years since there were separate diesel and petrol oils, but most meet both now).

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Have you noticed that a lot of oil comes in 4 litre cans now? My Renault holds 4.5 litres. Groan!
|
I've noticed this Mobil 1 comes in a 4 litre can in the UK and costs £32 in Halfords, yet in france the same branded oil costs £23 for 5 litres!!
Rip off britain ..you bet

I always bring car bits and pieces back from France. I am generally over there three times a year and try and get the car serviced as well.

PhilW My rover 75 diesel sump hold 8.5 liters so we can assume that the BMW 2L diesels will be the same as it's the same engine. My Bro's Audi 2.5 TDI A simialr quantity, Old passat TDI's i think 7 liters. Its all to do with extended service intervals. The thinking being more oil will take longer to breakdown, which in fact is a load of baloney as if the viscosity goes down due to contaminants then the whole batch of oil will be affected
Thats why i always change my oil every 3 to 4k Petrol or diesel

A Passat 130 PDI takes 4 litres of expensive oil, and is supposed to last about 18000 miles if you are brave/daft enough.
