Passat B4 excessive brake pedal travel - Sofa Spud
The brake pedal on my 95 Passat 1.9 TDI has always needed to be pushed down quite a way before there is any real response from the brakes. Otherwise, the brakes are effective. Recently the pedal travel has got worse. Bleeding the brakes improves the situation but it soon deteriorates again. The front pads and rear shoes are OK.

The actual free travel in the pedal mechanism is only slight (as can be felt when engine, and therefore servo, is off). The long travel is between when the pedal begins to apply the brakes and when they give effective stopping power. I'm wondering if the flexible brake hose sections are expanding, absorbing much of fluid displacement that should be applying the brakes (they look OK to te eye). There are no apparent leaks in the hydraulic system.

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Sofa Spud

This could well be a flexi pipe expanding but it take two to identify the problem as you need to stand on the brakes with the engine running to use the servo. The other possibility is a servo leak when you have pressure on the pedal. Regards Peter

It could just be the rear shoes need adjusting, the automatic adjusters may have seized.

you say front and rear shoes ok?if the front pads are down but look ok then the pistons may be retracting in the calipots when foot off brake therefore necessatating long pedal travel before pad hits disc
The same for rear shoes,ie springs pulling shoes away from drum.A quick way to test rear shoes is leave handbrake on (car stationary)and apply footbrake, what is it like?if better then shoes need adjustement, for the front try clamping the hoses and then seeing if pedal improves if it does then suspect low pads
The other possibility is your brake fluid needs changing im sure it would benefit from this, when was it last changed?every two years is the recommendation.
The hoses are checked at mot for cuts/bulges while car running suggest get mot early if nearly due and let man with hat check them for you?

Thanks for advice. I reckon I've bled the brakes enough times over the last few months to effectively renew the fluid! I'll investigate all the above things or take thcar to the garage (which couldn't find anything wrong with the brakes last time I mentioned this!).

More likely the rear shoes need adjusting, try this-handbrake off press on pedal then fully apply handbrake.if pedal drops rears need adjusting, pedal drop will depend on how bad the adjustment is.ps with engine running due to servo

'for the front try clamping the hoses and then seeing if pedal improves if it does then suspect low pads'

Surely the easiest way to check for low pads is to inspect the calipers?

quite true sierraman but if you read the Sofa Spud question very carefully he says pads and shoes are "okay" (his words) so i was circumnavigating this so he got down and got under, weve all given pads a cursory glance and thought they were ok only to take wheel off and find a pad worn down due to a sticking calipot/slide?i have.
