And this obsession with 'protecting children'. Funnily enough I was always told to actually look and never to run out in the road...god forbid parents take responsibility for their children.

Nothing new in this. The dutch have this "shared area" concept for years, They put benches in the road, plant pots, (big ones mind) tress, - all sorts of things to break up the "percieved right of way" thinking.
