I am endeavouring to help this young man to find reasonably priced insurance for a Toyota Corolla 1.3L GL 1992 J reg.
Please may I have suggestions as to where to get a deal which will not break the Bank.
Thanks in anticipation.

Try confused.com, it's a very good starting point.
|
Endorse confused.com. Saved me £100+ this renewal!
|
The first four I would try would be
Tesco
elephant.co.uk
swiftcover.com
budgetinsurance.com
Depending on which of those is cheapest (and more than one of these if they were close) I would then go to
Direct Line/Churchil/Privilege;
Admiral/Bell Direct;
N/A;
insureyourmotor.com/a local insurance broker
|
|
|
If the young man is in London with zero no claims, then Bell will offer the cheapest.
|
Many thanks for all the above info. It gives me plenty to be going on with!

For young drivers, generating random numbers using a calculator is more accurate than Confused.com.
According to Confused, my best quote this year was £1600 with NUD.
Funny that NUD themselves quoted me just £600 - I find this repeated with virtually everyone I know, it truely is useless.

Insurers will offer different rates through different distribution channels. There is no such thing as a "Norwich Union set premium" for a risk. In some situations an insurer will be using different rating criteria, discount scales, volume overriders and these will vary in multiple ways somteimes even varying day by day depending on the relationship that the insurer has with the intermediary, the volume of business, terms of the relationship etc etc never mind the various rating criteria they may apply to direct business at 9am on a Tuesday.
All you can do is check a variety of sources including some intermediaries. In my youth some of the best deals for "non-standard" risks were Lloyd's Syndicates available only via a broker. I remember getting a Golf insured for me at 18yrs old for £140 a year with KGM a LLoyd's syndicate. So approach a local broker or intermediary and ask if they have access to the Lloyd's motor syndicates.

I agree with Michael - not that I want to put a dampner on things.
The 3 times I've used Confused, the quotes have been shocking - yet others swear by it. The same goes for Elephant who usually add 700 quid on top of my normal quote. Again, other mates get the best quotes with them. I'm not sure if I'd like it to be my postcode or not.
I'd echo the advice given - the best thing you can do is just keep getting manual quotes. Boring I know but in less than half a day, I shaved almost a grand off my Dad's quote.

I too have not had the best set up with confused. I was quoted one price by one insurer, went to complete transaction as it was a very good price, and then the price had doubled! Reason was that 'some of the details you have given me now sir are different from the original quote' - althouhg I was reading them off the original quote! Same thing happend to my friend aswell. Very strange.
Again would say best advice is to get onto phone and do each one manually. Might be that this is the best option for young drivers.

I thought your dad drove a 626?!? Why was his insurance that high that you could shave almost £1000 of it?
|
When he was going to get that Lexus Nick. Group 17 - Dad with 0 No Claims = Pricey!
|
Oh! I thought you were going to say he had 20in Chrome wheels, and had chipped the engine, fitted a body kit etc on his 626 :-)
Appreciate a group 17 with 0 NCD is not a good combo!

Having asked for help from Backroomers, I like to subsequently let you know the outcome.
As suggested, I started out with 'Confused' and was impressed by their rapid response. I then made some phone calls and ended up with Direct Choice on 0800 458 1750 who tightened their belts to offer the best deal.
Their quote was about half of the one offered by a company who said they would 'quote me happy'!!!
My thanks to all of you.
