Looking to buy a s/h diesel astra estate.
I gather some have Isuzu engines while others have GM engines.
Is one preferable over the other, & if so why?

I've recently sold my old Cavlier td with the Isuzu engine.
At 80 to 100k the valve shims will need adjusting to allow it to start when its cold.
Change the cambelt every 50k miles.
Change the water pump and seal when the cambelt is done for the second time.
Change teh oik occaisionally and you have a bombproof engine that will run forever. I only got rid of the cavalier as tinworm was approachign terminal.
The Isuzu engine has an excellent repotaion, the GM engine has a much worse one. Go for the Isuzu every time.

I'll agree with spikeyhead, except that I would suggest the valve clearances are looked at every 18K, rather than leaving it to 80K - it really does need doing, and isn't a big job. Some garages make heavy weather of the job, but you will be able to tell by how long they estimate the job should take.
