I hope The Lawman and P2501 don't mind me posting this but here goes nothing.
Insured myself on the Lexus. Get the certificate. All sorted for picking it up this week when I get a call.
The gearbox has given up basically. Keeps jumping out of gear. Could cost loads, or might cost not loads. No-one knows and to be honest, I've got a perfectly good car and am not really willing to risk it. If I had some money behind me, I might have still gone ahead and seen if I could have fixed it but I would have been knackered if I couldn't.
It was an old car and I guess I'm lucky that this never happened next week as I'm not out of any money - just hurt pride after bragging about it on here.
However, as my Dad said. It could be a lot worse and after going out for a refreshing (quick) spin in my car, I've realised that he's right.

Ask him if he'll let you take it off his hands, then get quotes on a new box ;)
|
I did. And he said he didn't really want to because he wanted to stay friends with my Dad!
Him and his brother are the best engineers I know and have said they're not even going to touch it. Just stick it in an auction or put it up for sale or something.
Someone will buy it and no doubt get an absolute cracker of a car once they've solved the gearbox problem. It was immaculate but there'll be others.
I wish I liked the look of the Mk2 GS. Then it'd give me something to aspire to in the future.

This is, obviously, fate. It's saving you from the dull tedium of the GS300. It's showing you the way forward - the only way.
You must buy an E39 528i.
|
I have to say, I think an E39 5 series is one of the best looking cars out there.
Who knows where I'll be in a year. Wouldn't mind if I was in a 5 series!

|
Are my eyes failing ?
My mind says MichaelR -> mondeo
but for some reason I keep reading it as bm 5 series.
maybe I need another beer...

Did I say bombproof? No, not I.

I just won't ask anyone's opinions again. Bombproof. I ask you. ;-o
Now that I'm over not getting a nice RWD 3.0 to play in, it's dawned on me how lucky I am.
Just imagine if I bought it (as planned) last week. Ho ho - I think I'd have left the BR forever.....
...Shut it!

It's quite simple. Cheap? Mondeo! Not that cheap? Get a 5!
Hence I've got a Mondeo, and plan to... buy a 528i Sport next Summer, after I've saved all my hard earned student cash :p

Adamski,
You were actually going to buy a car from a friend/acquaintance?
That's just about the worst thing that you could possibly do. I think you might have had a lucky escape.

Rather than worrying about a Lexus there are more important matters to deal with, such as: - .... Where are we holding the NW BR Xmas Meet?
Come on, what was that pub like?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
Did you get the diamond put in your tooth or not?
|
Bumped into a mate last night (figuratively) and he just got rid of his Mk2 GS300 as it needed £2,000 of engine work.

Lexus GB are quite proud of the fact that they no LS400 ever had to have a new gearbox since it was launched in 1989. It was a different unit fitted to the LS400, compared with the GS300. Incidentally, despite my head saying Mondeo TDCi, I'm viewing a GS300 Sport and 540i Sport on the weekend.
|
I know Snaily but that's where I got my Fiesta from and that was a decent enough car!
Fortunately I'd held off all the jewelry on the off chance.
The sad thing is, this had had a fair bit of engine work done to it but there'll be other cars. I'd still consider the right one - that's how impressed I was.
And E, stop being impatient! I'll publish my findings at the weekend ;-) Oh - and I'll email you that stuff tonight when Mum gets in.
Cheers,
Adam

Sounds like a lucky escape all round Adam. And the bloke who was selling it sounds like the sort of bloke you should be glad to have as a friend.
|
Definitely a lucky escape but that's why I was buying from Dad's mate - peace of mind! I didn't have to worry about it being a dodgy car. I suppose it wasn't. With 170k on, anything could have gone wrong I guess.
Oh well - I think I might go and wash the car. That'll cheer me up.
