Forgot to mention the rain sensor operated wiper speed adustment system doesn't work.
Do all of the things suggested in the manual (instigating it after ignition switch on via. manipulating the stalk position) but it just does a pre-determined 5 second wipe, regardless of rain / sun.
The sensors are there on the windscreen, and aren't obscured / dirty.
My previous 406 used to work fine (very effectively)
I wonder whether all of these fancy electronic systems ( including the climate control) are separate units or are all controlled by a systems CPU, in which case, disconnecting the battery might re-set everything?

Disconnecting the battery may work, but I would hazzard a guess that it has one or both of its lens' missing. Slide your rear veiw mirror down to remove, the sensor is now visable, on each side is a green clip, slide these aoutwards to remove the sensor from the screen, there should be two rectangular clear gel pads between the sensor and the glass, these act as a lens. Unfortunatly they are not available seperatly only as a complete unit from Peugeot at ~£120.

If this a new (to you) car, does it definitely have rain sensing wipers? I'm surprised that it works every 5 seconds - I would have expected to to either work or not work.
Is it really clever enough to know that it's broken and default to intermittant?

Yep.

Pity these sensors cost £150 pounds, that's probably a lot more than the excess you would pay for a new windscreen (including sensor)if it were to get broken. The pheasant that flew into my windscreen a few months ago broke the screen as if it had been hit by a large hammer.

Yes Bill, it has the sensor system behind the RVM, and yes, it has defaulted to a fixed period 5 second wipe interval.

Thanks Guys.
AR-coolC - I'll look for the lenses. Actually, now that you mention it, the two semiconductor sensors look more "whiteish" than they did on my previous car, and the housing cover seems to be set back from the windscreen by 4 mil. I wonder whether it was interfered with when they fitted the microphone for the in-car mobile phone microphone wiring?
By the way, how do you "..slide the RVM down..."?

Just grab hold of the whole assembly including the sensor cover part and slide down, you may need to include a little wiggle ( of the mirror not you ).

Thanks very much for your help guys - asp AR-CoolC
REMEDY:
The lenses were intact, but the whole sensor assembly was not attached to the windscreen via the two metal plates (they hold the unit, and latch into its green slider retainers)and so was set back a few mils.
It seems very critical that the unit is fixed via. these retainers and flush with the windscreen (I tried the system manually doing this, and it started to work).
I superglued the metal plates back on, fixed the unit in place, and it now works....ALL AFTER I'D ORDERED A REPLACEMENT UNIT @ £20!!!!!
Anyone want to buy one?

ALL AFTER I'D ORDERED A REPLACEMENT UNIT @ £20!!!!!
The last time I ordered one of these (approx 3 years ago) it was £120, where did you order it from?
