Distances between cars - M4 this morning - dieselicious
Huge smash on M4 at 8am today between jct 26 and 27

I put the brakes on, the guy behind me swerved to avoid my rear end, but he got hit from behind, and another 10 or so cars couldn't stop in time, and all ended up introducing themselves to each other.

When will people learn to leave adequate braking distances?

I drove off, as i was unhit, and technically not involved. I called the emergency services and 5-live travel desk immediately, but should i have stopped??

Not in my opinion - assuming you didn't do anything untowards to cause the accident. And if you had, then most people wouldn't stop anyway.
Although if anyone was seriously hurt then I imagine the Police would want to speak to you.

i just put my brakes on hard enough so i didn't end up in the back seat of the car in front of me!

I know the police have my phone number, so i guess they'll call me if they need a witness statement.
