re golf mk2 automatic - r3d_dwarf
Hi im interested in buying a very clean low mileage ( under 98k miles ) mk2 golf automatic, my question is are they any good i mean the auto boxes?? i did have a escort auto P reg a while ago and well frankly, ford ought to be lined up and shot because they are so shat in making them.
Anyway back to my original question like i said, any good and what should i look for?
ps its got a new mot.
thanks

I think they are ZF boxes so quite durable. But on a car of this age, anything could be right or wrong with it as it's old.

forgot to mention its one of the last its a J plate but with the 1.6 engine not the 1.8

Autobox should be ok but the rest may be getting a bit dog eared now, afterall it's 15 years old. You could well experience some problems with the Pierburg carb, they are difficult to set up properly. A lot of people recommend replacing with a Weber (you must notify your insurance though as it's a mod) but usually a good garage can get a Pierburg running ok.

Thanks for your input mate overall sounds a good car ( rather than my escort ( :( )
the chap says its running fine with no problems but if its only a carb to worry about i think i take a chance, by the way how much would a webber carb cost and where do you find one??
thanks

Golfs tend to wear pretty well, some friends have an 'A'reg that is still in good nick.A Webber will be around £200,an online search will find suppliers, simple to fit although you may need a garage to set it up for the emissions.
