Okie dokie, nothing like advanced planning.
There is a good chance I shall be driving to Ljubljana - next April. No cant fly due to the "cargo"
My sat nav stops at Austria tho Michelin web site covers it all the way - about 1300 kms Calais to Ljubljana.
I assume my route will be through Austria. Never driven Austria or Slovenia. Any tips? Weather/Snow be gone by then?

As an aside, I could average about 100kms an hour, two drivers, so its 13 hours there. I dont intend to however, so any good stopover points hotels after about 7 hours?

I've driven through Austria several times, but headed east to Hungary, rather than south to Slovenia. I guess that would mean you and I would part company around Salzburg. The route I came to prefer was Calais - Lille - Namur - Luxembourg - Stuttgart - Munich etc.
Main thing about Austria is to remember to get your pass to drive on motorways.
Earliest I've driven it was May, and the snow was well gone by that time - at least anywhere I wanted to drive.
As for stopover points, where you are after 7 hours depends not just on your speed of travel, but also on when you start and where you start from! I've used stopovers from Trier to Ulm.
Trier is a nice town, but it might be a bit early on your journey to stop over. The place we stayed in Trier was the
www.hotel-deutschherrenhof-trier.de/
which was fine. Not expensive, but no complaints - rooms not very big though. There are no doubt better places in town, but I've stayed at the Deuchherrenhof twice, and would happily do so again.
If you want to go further than Trier, Heidelberg is supposed to be nice. I guess you know that Tripadvisor.com is a good resource for checking out hotels.

Brings back happy memories - but my info might be way out of date from when we used to drive to Greece in the '70s and '80s. However, I do remember that "in the old days" we used to have to cross several pretty steep and high passes between Salzburg and Klagenfurt (Porsatch, Tauern, Katschberg?) but that in the last few years they had "motorwayised" the route with several impressive tunnels which "removed" the passes (and probably your worries about snow). I think it is now motorway all the way from Salzburg to Llubljana via Villach.
As for hotels for overnighters, how about ibis (about 50-70 euros for a room)and they have loads in France and S Germany (Stuttgart, Augsburg, Munich etc)
www.ibishotel.com/ibis/reservez/fr_top.jsp?ecran=r...e
OR Etap - more basic but still own shower/toilet for 30-40 euros

Enjoy your trip!!

p.s. On second thoughts, I imagine that you will probably go through France on the autoroute, thereby missing Belgium, Luxembourg, etc. completely. I however, was in the business of avoiding the tolls!

Not really a driving suggestion... BUT do make sure you visit Bled. Truly beautiful place. Went to a conference in 1999, it was a really special place.

If you're looking for inexpensive overnight accommodation in Germany or Austria, leave the motorway and look for the sign 'Fremdenzimmer' on houses in the villages. This is a sign for bed and breakfast. Invariably clean and welcoming. I've done this all over Germany and Austria and my family has never been disappointed.

I have done a similar route to Tyro though on to Innsbruck and over the Brenner Pass to Cortina d'Ampetso in northern Italy.
