I seem to have completely lost the use of my remote key fob. The range was getting shorter and shorter so I replaced the battery which helped for a while - then it became erratic when it worked.
Yesterday it stopped working all together. I've tried reprogramming the remote using the Ford procedure but the fob doesn't seem to respond in the programming mode.
Is this a common failure point? I've seen the fobs on EBay so I'm now wondering if I should try and get a second hand one and reprogramme that instead. Has anyone tried doing that? I know you can programmer the trandsponder and the remote locking transmitter seperately so in theory it will work!

Snakey, I went through exactly the same thing - you're in luck - it'll cost you just 50 quid as opposed to the 120 quid Ford want you to think it costs.
50 quid is bad enough I know but a saving of seventy whole pounds makes it sound so much better.
Give me a min to find my post.

I can't find it anywhere. It was something I'd definitely ramble on about here though so your guess is good as mine.
The long and short of it was, go to Ford, buy the remote for 40 something quid, the key part for 7 quid and get them to cut it. Mine did it for free - you never know.
DON'T let them program it. That's what costs the 70 quid. As long as you have two other keys, you can program it yourself.
I'll keep looking for that post. (It was the contacts that had worn away)

Right. I cannot find it for the life of me which either mean's Dave's got an itchy delete finger, or I never posted it..
....or I'm just plain inept. Hopefully someone'll be along who can find it.

Thanks for your replies!
I thought you could programme a new key using only one original key? I have the Remote (bust) key and a normal key with just the transponder in.
I know the Focus manual tells you how to programme a transponder type - I have the Ford TIS which tells you how to programme the remote fob - a two minute job! And Ford want silly money for that!

....or I'm just plain inept.
Yep, I quite agree.

Well Dave - for once, I'm glad to be able to say;
You're inept!!! DD's inept!!!!!
That isn't what I was on about but I'm sure it helps. I am 99% certain I started a thread wittering on about how I'd been up to Ford, bought the key, programmed it and so on. Obviously I haven't though.
Snakey, as I understand it, you must have two other keys. Doesn't matter if the remote works or not but the system must recognise the other two keys.

Adski,
You only get three keys when you are using the ssystem with the RED fot on the key. If the dot is BLUE you only get and need two keys

That clears it up a bit - mine has the blue dot. I think a search of ebay for replacements might be the next stage.
Which system has the red dot then?
|
My 98 Mondeo has two keys.
One with remote buttons and one without.
The simple key has a visible red transponder in it.
The 99 Focus in our household has two similar keys except with a blue transponder.
IIRC the blue one is the later version.
The critial situation seems to be that with both cars you need TWO keys with a transponder that is set up to talk to your vehicle. If the metal end of the key is damaged, I understand you can get a new key cut and the transponder transfered to the newly cut key. If you have only one correct transponder then it will be £150 to sort out.
see www.mirez.co.uk/Keys.htm
|
I meant you will need two other keys OTHER than the new one.
So as you are, you will need two keys before you buy the new one if you wish to reprogram it yourself.
ALl Focuses have the blue chip ones if that matkes it any easier.

I have the same two keys, one with the remote function and a plain one. Both start manually unlock the car and start it OK so I'm now planning to get a second hand remote unit - reprogramme it to my car and swap the cut key end over.
Or is that too easy to be true?
|
That should work and I thought of doing that but (and it's a minor but), half your key may look nice and new and the other will be worn.
If that doesn't bother you, then go for it. But if it's going to cost you anywhere near 40 quid, you may as well go all out for a new one.

Hi
I have the same plan for my fiesta, buying a second hand remote, a blank key blade and get it cut to my key, then programme it into the car using the hold and press three times setup, then i was going to add the new key by the coding process,( turning each key to 2nd mark then back to O for all keys,
sorry is this sounds a bit mad but i've been looking for help on this for ages, so i'm basicly asking is this possible
many thanks

Yes but for £130 ,I got a second remote key for Mondy, with no hassle, no looking up anything, all keys work and job done.
Time/skill costs money and that's life I suppose.
Do they really work on a DIY, what if they are all pink fluffy diced up?
