M40 Junctions 9-10 - greenhey
If you listen to traffic reports on the radio, there seems to be a disproprtionate number of incidents in the area of J9-10 of the M40.
I travel up and down this stretch regularly and I'm forming a theory about it. Long queues on the on and off slips at J10 are the norm most of the day.
I think a lot of people are using the M1-A43 (recently upgraded)-M40-A34 as a kind of outer M25, linking the West and the South Coast to East Midlans, Yorkshire and the North East .
The danger is that wehn people joing the M40 at 10,going south they don't realise it's a short run to 9, where they are leaving again .There is a dedicated lane to exit at 9, and if you miss it it's very difficult to get into it before the exit ; hence the accidents , from people cutting in.
I reckon what could be done, includes better warnings at 10 to keep letf, or even widening to 4 lanes for about 2 miles before 9

I think you're right - with the upgrading of the A43 this is the best way for many in the South to get to the North (either M1 or M6) without going near the M25.

It may just be the extra volume of traffic that leads to the accidents. But there is a problem - and you see it also on the M40 southbound at the junction with the M25 - in that people slow down and queue far too soon in the left hand lane, and others cut in later where there are big gaps nearer the junction. In some cases there isn't even a queue at the turn-off.

I'm not sure what would help - widening might be the answer as you say - but as always if people would only keep their distance and not slow down suddenly the queueing might be limited to times when there really is a blockage at the turn-off.

A while ago I posted a question on this area of the M40 regarding the disporoportionate number of overturned HGVs at the A43 Junction. It has a horrendous layout with several adverse cambers. A single problem on this road layout effectively shuts both the A43 and M40 very quickly.
