Apparently Mr Muscle oven cleaner does a great and easy job of cleaning brake dust from alloys.

Is there any risk of damage to tyre or lacquer/wheel?
Cleaning alloys - Mr Muscle? - Adam {P}
Hmm. Never heard that one before guv'nor but if it doesn't damage the paint of laquer in Mother's oven then I don't see why it should on a wheel.

I don't work for Tetrasyl (or however it's spelt) but Wonder Wheels is the best you can get. Just like water, you paint it onto your wheels. It dissolves the dirt on contact ready for you to hose off.

I've not used it in a while because a) I'm lazy and b) I spilt a tiny bit on my hand last time and it hurt a bit.

I'd be a bit cautious. It contains a very strong alkali, sodium hydroxide. Oven interiors tend to be vitreous enamel (effectively glass). That's a bit more resistant to chemicals than laquer. Instructions severely limit the surfaces it should be used on and it atually says don't use on aluminium, plastic or polished surfaces, among others.

Mr Muscle is evil stuff (it used to be worse but was toned down as it was stripping skin off peoples arms.) Anyway, would let that stuff anywhere near my Alloys.

Except Polycell brush cleaner for my wheels.
Nothing extra to buy or store in my household.
Gets tar not skin off. I have used it on cars for years and years.

I have also found Wonder Wheels to be very good. Also Halfords branded produce works fine. Personally I only use these products as a last resort, regular cleaning with just warm water is the best once a week. Go on, you know you want to...

Washing up liquid + hot water from the tap removes brake dust no problem . If the wheels are off for any reason it removes any build up of dust etc that has probably been there for months. With reguard to salt content etc I rinse the wheels as I am cleaning them. Oh and I have never had a problem using household glass cleaner on the windows, have been using Lidl glass cleaner and I can,t see the point in buying a special "glass cleaner for car windows"

Swarfega (excuse spelling not going out to the garage to check!) the stuff you use to clean your hands after servicing the motor. Always figured if I shifted dirt from your hands without harming them it would do the same on the wheels. Does it for me.

Once thoroughlly cleaned get some simoniz hard wax and get a few good coats onto the alloys - makes it so much easier to clean brake dust and other road crud off them.

I'd be worried about the effect of some of these things on tyres too. I once got paint on a tyre of a radio controlled car, and left it to soak in Polycell brush cleaner, the next day, it was twice the size and floppy!
Washing up liquid contains formaldehyde (or was it metaldehyde) that is supposed to ruin rubber.

BTW, Wonderwheels is a great aluminium brightener if used on garden furniture or cam covers etc...

It's best to take the wheels off before you clean them, otherwise the cleaner can damage calipers/discs.

Wonder Wheels active ingredient is basically Hydrochloric acid.

I bought a set of alloys which had been standing on a car for over two years last week and my pressure washer at almost point blank couldn't shift the baked on brake dust.

Wonder Wheels and a brush shifted it in no time at all.

Is there any other ingredient in it which is particularly nasty?

I only ask because I remember in Chemistry, I spilt Hydrochloric acid on my hand and don't remember feeling much. When I knocked a capful of WW onto my hand though, it began itching like crazy and was sore for a while.

Ignore me. HCL would have been dilluted a lot for school use.

I'll just go now and find something else to do.

Even WW is harsh on alloys.
I use it diluted down as if your alloys are showing any damage it'll strip off even more.

Just FYI, Wonder Wheels i savailable at Costco for about £9.00 a gallon as opposed to the 500ml bottles in accesory shops for about the same price.

I can also recommend the Hiolts screenwash fron Costco - cheap too!

BTW, Ihave no connection with Costco other than being a customer!

Autoglym alloy wheel cleaner is very good at removing finger prints.....from your fingers!
After some vigourous scrubbing and rinsing, I was wondering why my fingers were a little bit tender. It was because the acid in the stuff had stripped the skin off to the point where my fingers were bleeding!

I now use soap and water and an alloy wheel brush.
Cleaning alloys - Mr Muscle? - glowplug
Cleaned mine with wonder wheels then polished with Autoglym resin then Autoglym extra gloss protectant. Following this I just use Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner.

Any reason why you're commenting on a 14yo thread that's been dead for all that time?

I use Mukoff on bicycles, motor cycles and cars. I don't let it dry and hose it off promptly. Works well on wheels and I do not find it to be corrosive.

Right-ho! Not always easy to tell once the original spam post is deleted and they don't refer to it specifically, especially as some genuine BRers have responded to dead threads in that way before.
