Intermittent fault with engine cutting out usually happens at low revs when approaching a junction or roundabout. When trying to re-start engine its starts and then revs drop almost immediately.
Leaving it to stand usually gets it started again but in an emergency have to place foot on brake increase acceleration and then put it in drive.
It will then pull away.
Engine has not stalled whilst in motion over 40mph but its frightening that this will happen.I have lost confidence with the motor which in all other respects is first class.
Is going in again to see if fault can be isolated today.
But as the last time it happened previously was almost 3 weeks ago I feel its going to be a pig to find the fault.

Its just a gummed-up idle air valve. Clean it all out (and the relevant hoses) - use carb. cleaner spray. Clean the throttle body and throttle disc too - use a toothbrush.

thankyou so much for that.everyone pointed to the idle and gummed up throttle body.
Cleaned out fully and was tacky and gummed.
Am fairly confident this will clear it as the Revs seem to be much more consistent

These are also the same symptoms you get if the air pipe to the MAP sensor is gummed up. This is a small bore plastic pipe that leads from somewhere on the inlet manifold to the MEMS ECU. Clean through with carb cleaner.

PS: if you join the Rover Owners Club (rovertorque.co.uk) you'll be able to download my article on cleaning the throttle body on a T series - the basics are the same.
