I have always wondered this - I mean the conventional boxes not the rubber band jobbies or the DSGs.
I guess what I'm asking is how do they actually change, what is it that initiates and executes this. Obviously in this day and age there are electronic sensors, but autos have been around for a long time so originally it must be a hardware mechanism.
