Volvo V70 (2005) Air Con - Buster Cambelt
Any ideas why the AC in my V70 does this?

- it switches off every time the engine is turned off;
- it switches off after about 20 minutes;
- when in use it blows hot air for about 15 seconds at random intervals.

One of very many woes with this car and the Volvo dealer's response that "some do that" is hardly constructive.

Hi there,
I have an S60 T5 SE that does that, has your car got ECC?

Not having a car with climate control I'm going to take a stab in the dark.

1) Isn't it meant to switch off with the engine off?

2 and 3) *Pure Guess* - When the temperature gets to the pre-selected one, it shuts off to maintain it and not get any colder/hotter. Does it come back on again after a while?

It has what Volvo calls Climate Control... not very good though, the last half dozen cars have had CC and did it much better.

According to Volvo it is supposed to stay set and not go off whhe the engine goes off

According to Volvo it is supposed to maintain the temperature and, as you say switch on and off (most systems do this subtlely) to keep the temperature constant.

This system just blows VERY hot air randomly and then goes back to what it was doing.

I assume you mean that when you switch the engine off, the climate control settings should be kept as they were and revert back to them when you switch the engine on again?

I have a 2003 V70 2.4T SE with climate control, and it works brilliantly. Much better than in friends Mercs, Audis, and Beemers that I have tried. Just set the desired 'his and hers' temperature, and forget about it.

The only time we ever fiddle with the temperature is in scorching direct sunshine but even then this is only to get the effect of cool air on hot skin because the cabin temperature remains well controlled.

What is really brilliant is the one-push 'auto' button that results in the climate control not only taking command of temperature maintenance but also airflow distribution, and deciding when to allow recirc or not (humidity and temperature in the cabin are taken account of as well as pollution levels outside), and so on.

RF - For info the dual temperature controls are rotary switches turned against painted temperature markings on the face plate rather than push buttons activating a digital display, so user settings are preserved even if the battery were to be disconnected.

Ahh sorry. I thought you meant the air con literally turned off with the engine. I was going to say - Volvo haven't made a new technological discovery have they?

Well that's the theory. What actually happens is that the AC itself is always "off" when you start the engine. So it doesn't matter where the temperature dials are set. It also sometimes turns "off" after about 20 minutes of use. It also blasts hot air at random intervals.

And if you press "auto" it switches on again, but it is certainly nowhere near a "set and forget" system. We have a 6 year old Audi A6 (with what you call his and hers temperatures) that does this kind of thing properly.

I have had three Volvo dealers say "yes some do that" but no offer of a fix.

Well, something is certainly wrong with yours, BC, despite what the dealers are saying and their apparent lack of help. Our 2003 V70 2.4T system is as "set and forget" as I describe - both between journeys and during a journey - as is the one in my brother's 2002 V70 D5. In the shoes you describe I would probably ask my dealer to conduct an investigation in conjunction with an a/c specialist; I did this before with a Vauxhall I used to own after the dealer ran out of things to do or say, and to my surprise, they agreed. The problem was solved within an hour!
