It seems you cna get some pretty low mileage examples of these nice LOOKING cars for a pretty good price (5-6k). What's the story? Are they a nightmare to run - I've heard a few rumors about reliablitity and build quality on Alfa's generally. Should I avoid these? Can anyone suggest an alternative??

Have been driving them now for almost 7 years. My brother still has my first one. They have been in the main excellent cars, still look great and drive well. Things to look out for are cambelt changes, should be done every 36k to be on safe side, and worn bushes on earlier models.
I now have a 156GTA (the 3.2 V6) and I think its a terrific car, and very quick

And the alternative, quite simply, is a less interesting, less beautiful car. ;)

For some reason everybody equates the alfas of 2o years ago with more modern equipment and so they depreciate very badly. A result for those of us that have seen the light cos we get superb cars that look fantastic and drive well for bargain bucket money.

So no one has had to replace the gearboxes on theirs then?
I read a review from 1 fella who'd had 3 replacements in a 25k miles 156.. That certainly rang a few alarm bells for me!

There are more reliable cars, there are faster cars, there are more economical cars, there are more practical cars and there are some more reliable, faster, more economical and more practical cars however the Alfa does offer a unique blend of driving enjoyment and charisma.

Sure.. I'm just worried if I buy one - I'll be seeing the purchase price going out again over 2 years just on maintenance.

If you get a good one, look aftee it, check the oil frequently and generally treat it with a bit of TLC, it should give you years of pleasure.
I believe the gearbox probs arise with the Selespeeds.
Mods, PLEEZE amend the title of this thread. It offends my and doubtless all other Alfistis' sensibilities :}
