Hi HJ and All,

Sorry to hear about the problems, all I knew of it was that I could not log in this morning, otherwise busy over the weekend.

Is it true that two weeks are lost completely, not even a back up at the ISP?, they usually run RAID servers. Such a great shame if truly lost for ever!

Regards.

Cheddar and others,

Basically 2 drives went down on the server and even though RAID was being used, loosing 2 drives meant that 2 weeks worth of data was lost.

Luckily Stephen had a snapshot of the site, but only up until the 11th July, which is why all postings after that date have been lost.

Yes, it's a shame, but what are the chances of 2 disk drives failing at the same time?

Losing 2 drives is more common than you might imagine - especially if the drives are of the same vintage. I must have hosting accounts with half a dozen big and small providers and four of them have had the same problem over the past year...

"Yes, it's a shame..." Infuriating - assume not only forum stuff was lost. I'm worried that HF's going to wake up and think she's regressed :)

"....but what are the chances of 2 disc drives failing at the same time?" - about the same as today ending with nobody having recommended a Mondeo TDCi to someone who doesn't want one or Renault not featuring over in technical. :)

Disks fail for a reason. That reason can affect more than one unit. e.g. in a heat wave one can lose a lot more than two in one go. There is frequently an environmental reason and its worth checking.

However, RAID and mirroring are methods of online resiliance but are both prone to failure under certain circumstances - the most obvious being that a corruption, bug or virus on one will immediately get reflected by the other.

Its normal to have periodic, full off-line back-ups with frequent, usually ngihtly, incremental backups. Incremental backups are kind of a pain but take up little room in this sort of environment.

School I used to work at we lost 4 drives simultaneously in the main storage server, though I believe it was down to a fault in the controller.

Then they discovered that the last month of backups didn't run properly...

OK, if two RAID drives have failed at the same time one should be recoverable by a data recovery specialist.

Actually if there were three drives and you lost two your screwed because the last drive doesn't contain enough inforamtion to be able to rebuild the array.

Mirrors are usually used for the Operating System, not the data but it depends on how you set up.

Having two drives go at the same time is unusual and most likely a raid controller error.

Has anyone tried using a "data recovery specialist" they cahrge a fortune for what they recover.

For me this site has always been very good and these things do happen.

You're probably correct. But there are a number of problems.

Firstly its expensive. One has to consider what price should be attached to information that would have become invalid and mostly useless within a week or two anyway.

Secondly, even if that data is recovered it will take a period of time. During that time the existing databases and files will have moved on. Merging those two sets of information could potentially be a big and difficult job. Again one would have to consider value.

Making sure it couldn't happen again in the future, on the other hand...................

But surely the answer is to set the disks up in the boot of a Mondeo TDCI and use the air conditioning to keep them cool...

I'll get me coat...

Perhaps useless though it is a great shame that the uninterrupted pool of, opinion, information and wit has now been interrupted and will never be able to be archived as a complete entity.

Yes it is expensive so would depend on what value is put on it.

Really shouldn't be a problem.

Quite agree.

Volvoman that is the single most amusing thing you have said on here. What a relief to find that it truly is June and not May.
