Hi all

I have a problem with my xantia 1.8 16v air con

Basically the on/off light faded and I took the switch off to clean the bulb, no problems all working, as i took put the switch back about 75% of the way it was still working fine, then i put the switch back all the way and it stopped, i.e. no click from the compressor and the fans aren?t spinning now.

The fans work normally when the thermostat opens.

Obviously this sound like an electrical problem, ive checked all the fuses all ok.

The air con switch itself lights up when you switch it on but there is no other activity, any ideas please or anyone in the Leicester area can help, many thanks.

I should not have bothered touching it, it was working fine before!

Logic says that as the switch was the last component to be worked on it is probably the culprit. It sounds as if either the connector on the back of the switch is not fully "home" or the contacts in the switch have been inadvertantly damaged.
It may be worth removing it again and checking/waggling the connector.

thanks mjm,

the white connector block on the back is tight to the switch. ive had a quick 'waggle' of the connector to the switch and also the wires at the back of the white connector block but no luck.

re. the switch, is there any basic way of checking it? all i have is a multimeter, i presume i require a voltmeter or similar.

Put your multimeter on the 'resistance' range (Ohms) and wire it accross the switch contacts. The resistance should be close to 0 ohms with the switch 'on' and close to infinity with it 'off'.
You probably require a new switch. I've worked on Citroen electrics before and the switches are junk.

Thanks aprilla but my understanding of electrics is closer to 0 than infinity!

I don?t understand your instructions. By switch contacts do you mean the four gold plates at the back of the switch? And where do i place the + and - wires from the multimeter.

Sorry to be so stupid!

No worries.

remove the switch. Use the red and black wires from the multimeter (doesn't matter which way round they go) and put across each pair of contacts in turn (one test lead to one contact). Then operate the switch. You won't damage anything, the voltage and current supplied by the MM are both too small to do any harm to the switch. It really helps if you have wiring diagram so that you can identify the relevant switch terminals (either directly, or from the wire colours that connect to them).

Without wishing to sound patronising, but because you've said you don't know much about electrics...

When you put your multimeter on the ohms range, touch (short) the two leads together before you test anything and make sure the needle swings right across (assuming analogue meter) or you get some sort of display change (if digital).

If nothing at all happens, the battery inside the meter needs renewing before you proceed.

ok thanks folks,

i think i understand. i have a haynes manual so ill look in tomorrow and give it a go. im going to buy a new switch of ebay anyhow
