Child seats in Taxis - Garethj
What's the law on this? For young children who would normally be in a kiddie seat, do they have to be in one when in a taxi, or as long as they've got seat belts on does it matter?

Would a taxi driver be allowed to pick up a parent and young child without a kiddie seat or is it the parent's responsibility rather than the taxi drivers?

The thought came to me last weekend as I saw a minicab with 4 children in the back, none of them belted....

Hi Garethj,

I dont think taxis have to offer child seats. Well not in the UK anyway.

Ive booked a taxi with xxxx on many occasions and ive never had to take my own child seat. We use different taxi companies when we book through instacab. If its a long journey then we let instacab know and they tell them company to bring one for us.

Im sure taxis are exempt and dont get a penalty.

Its not safe for the children but then some argue that buses arent either and no seat belts are provided on buses.

I didn't think it was necessarily law for taxis as the majority of customers are most likely adults rather than children and it would take up a fair bit of boot space if you were stacking up child car seats.

On the other hand, 4 children in the back with no seat belts on is a different matter... I'm sure the driver is responsible for making sure anyone under 16 is definitely wearing a seat belt.
