Mrs V and I are in the process of looking for another car to replace her trusty Felicia now she's passed her test and is starting to take the kids out more. Out of the blue, someone has offered to give her a 5 year old Xsara Picasso. At present we don't know anything much about the car, except its colour, the fact that it's only had the one owner and it won't be available until the end of the year but what are these cars like to drive, maintain and insure?
My feeling is that she should give it a try and see how it goes as it's going to cost her nothing and all that really matters is that it's safer than her current car, reliable and she can afford to insure it. I've looked in the books, the reports are better than I'd have thought and although neither of us like the styling, that's a minor factor really. For obvious reasons, if she does accept the car we won't want to just flog it on and get something else so has anyone got any feedback on these cars?

Cheers.

I don't know why you are hesitating; You don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth. Its the equivalent of a Renault Scenic only more reliable. At five years old it still has significant value whichever model it is. I beleive the insurance group is around 5-8 depending on the engine.

Thanks Alan - the only reason for some hesitation is that, due to the circumstances, Mrs V will feel obliged to keep the car for a reasonable time. As a gift, we'd feel uncomfortable taking it only to then have to chop it in for something else because she couldn't get on with it say. You're right and we're not complaining, the situation's not so much of a problem as potentially awkward. Glad to hear it's 'reliable' as that's a key factor.

Not much of an idea about their reliability, my only experience has been seeing them pitted against a C-Max, alongside other cars of the class, in a handling competition, naturally the C-max won. However, I don't reckon that's too important as Mrs V is unlikely to be launching it into a slalom at 50mph, or getting it airborne over a humpback bridge. At least I hope she's not! :-)

Even if it needs a few things fixing on it, the cost of ownership of a free Picasso will be much lower than any other car that you have to pay for, whether it's more reliable than the Picasso or not.

I would go for it!

I have two closer friends where the wife drives a Picasso, one petrol, one diesel. As far as I know, neither has had any problems with them, and when Ihave been driven in one, they seem comfortable and smooth.

Never say no a free car, unless it does not meet your requirements in any way and/or will be a money pit. Neither applies to you, so go for it!.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

I'd give it a good home! :-)

The Picasso is an ideal car for transporting the VM gene pool around. They are easy relaxed cars to drive, excelent visibility makes them safe to drive and very practical. You can rack up large miles in them with comfort, but easy to use round town as well.

Pity about the looks tho. It makes the Ugly tree look like a fine landscsape.

I'd endorse other reccomendations. Had one for 48 hours as a loan car, very easy to drive nice high seating position and front floor unobstructed by gearchange etc. AFAIK all the disels are HDI units, impossible to get less than 40mpg. Petrol models seem popular as well.

Kids will love the fold down tables, underfloor cubbies etc.

We nearly bought one but Berlingo won the day as SWMBO preferred it!!

Thanks all - reassuring. Agree about the looks though and with Mrs V being the young fashion conscious thing she is, she might take some tempting. I'll be quids in though :)

But surely it's a major step up from a Skoda felicia? If it was free i'd pretty much drive anything
Free Xsara Picasso? - volvoman
Yeah but I bought her the Felicia ;) and it has that emotional first car 'love' effect. I think the only 'problem' with the Xsara is that she'd been looking at sleeker/sportier looking cars and this one is quite different. Also, never underestimate the effect of fashion on some women! Lost count of the times I've wanted to buy her clothes only to be told they're not in vogue or don't look right for some reason. I suppose it's just a question of time before she looks at me like that and then I'll probably be for the chop along with the car :)

Men should NEVER EVER - THATS NEVER EVER - buy clothes for women. Give them the money - yes, but buy the clothes? you are on a looser every time.

Never owned one but a friend's broke down in Leeds city centre in January due to a faulty throttle potentiometer. Believe it was the 2.0HDI.

I have a 2.0hdi that coming up to 120K (not yet 4 years old). It's been uttely reliable and I get better than 50 MPG.

Even if this car is the world's worst Picasso without actually being broken - a tatty, 130k mile 1.6 LX needing a new cambelt and some minor cosmetics, lacking in air con - it'd still make £2,500 all day long privately (perhaps a little less trade). Your worst case scenario is that you are £2,500 up on the deal.

They're a good car and unless Mrs V really, really couldn't live with the looks, you should jump at it.

Cheers all - you realise you're all doing a very good job of doing my job :)

May persuade her yet!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi, I've had my 1.8SX Picasso for four years. It's been great, with a couple of exceptions....

1. Forward visibility is very seriously compromised by the windscreen pillars - you find yourself peering around them on right hand bends.

2. In bright sunshine, the top of the dash reflects onto the screen - which is REALLY dangerous. This can be fixed with a non-reflective sheet which goes on the top of the dash (a snip at £60!!!! - tho I'm sure you can improvise!)

Also....After 3 years, the exhaust went (Dealer fit only apparently - about £400!!

This year the clutch started to slip and the car needed a new gearbox...£2000.00 !!!!!!

Thank God it's on a full maintenance lease!
Free Xsara Picasso? - volvoman
Yep - been having a closer look at a couple today whilst out and about with Mrs V. The windscreen/side window pillar arrangement does seem very odd indeed. Just can't get used to the looks which remind me of the rear ends of 2 cars welded together in a funny sort of way!

Actually you have my sympathies here Vman, you're in a no win situatiuon.

If you accept the car then you're stuck with it for a while, and from what you've said I don't think you, or more to the point, Vlady, actually really WANT the car.

If you turn it down then I suppose you could look rqually bad for turning down a very kind offer of a free car!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

i had one form the auctions a month a go 02 reg 1.6sx
mine is perfect the only problem being it needed a new indicator stalk as it was coming on on its own.

we went to hayfield (derbys) on sunday from manchester with the aircon on and it was showing 40.6 mpg (petrol)

i have had the privilidge of driving merc e classes v70's mazda 6 and i dont think any of them are as easy to live with as my wifes picasso. the kids dont seem to argue and fight in it like they used to in our vectra, i cant explain it.

i bet you have it and never want to get rid of it
try the citroen picasso forum or carsurvey.org, there isnt one negative comment on there last time i looked
Free Xsara Picasso? - volvoman
More reassurance Derek, thanks.

Blue - it is a bit awkward really as you say but far from a problem. It's being offered with very good intentions so I'm not complaining and suspect Mrs V. could easily live with it, especially after the rather spartan and lacklustre Felicia :)

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see how things develop.

Good home wanted for free car? I wish I could be so lucky. There would be no reservations here.
Free Xsara Picasso? - Rebecca {P}
see also citroenpicasso.org (I think). I'm fairly sure HJ has a link to it from this site. It's an unofficial site with a helpful & informative forum. I found it very helpful when buying mine.

I've been pleased with it, and the kids far prefer it to the BMW I had before.

VM,

If you don't want the car, give it to me. I'll sell it of course but I'll be at least £2,500 up.

Orrrr, given my sister starts driving in a month, a good birthday present for her?
