P Reg Ford Escort 1.6i GLX temp gauge - Headstar
Well went to see an Escort 1.6i Zetec GLX last night. Went for a drive, very smooth, no odd noises/knocks/whines etc. Clean engine, no white gunk in the oil filler cap, good bodywork. Pretty decent car by all odds, except for the temperature gauge didn't appear to work (moved very slightly, but stayed at below the scale). Guy said it does work but takes time, not sure about this. Checked all other usuals (lights, emissions, brakes, gears etc), but the gauge is bugging me a bit.

Gut feeling is to go with it, as overall and for the price it seems pretty good. Going to do an HPI check on it, but anyone any thoughts on this?

Details : P reg, 78000 miles. No Service History unfortunately.

Thanks

It is the temperature sender on the thermostat. A common fault on the zetec engine and cost less than a tenner from Ford. You don't need to drain the coolant to replace it - just have the new one ready when on the last thread of removing the old one.

Forgot to say. There are two sensors on the thermostat housing, the one you need to check/replace is the bottom one. This one sends the signal to the temperature gauge. The top one tell the fan when to kick in.

this is good news :o)

thanks for that - so easy enough job then? I'd be taking it to a garage to repair - I'm no use with cars, being a girl and all ;o)

It really is only a five minute job. I think there is a simple test to confirm a duff sender - it involves bridging the connector (DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT THOUGH) perhaps somebody else can advise.

That is a way of testing, however I don't think it should be advised as it can overheat the needle coils if shorted for too long. Best way would to be just replace the sensor; you know the needle works because it moves at least a little way. If the needle/wiring was duff I wouldn't think it would move at all.

I suppose there is a slight chance that the thermostat is duff? If so take a good look at the one that comes out to see if it is rated at 88C or 92C. Ford seem only to supply 92C now, this temp. made my Mondeo run over half-way on the temp. scale, so I purchased an 88C from Halfords that works ok. Looking at the one I had removed revealed it was an 88C.
Good luck.
