Protected and Guarenteed are the types offered. Guarenteed is normally unlimited claims, whilst protected is normally 3 claims in a period (mine's 5 years).

Oh dear. Have you been making unlimited claims?
Three claims in 40 years, none of them my fault. The change to my policy is the same as for everyone else that has a protected NCD with my insurer. Up to now, however, a protected NCD meant exactly that, with no conditions or provisos. I can only assume that my insurers have now realised that they were out of step with the majority of the rest of the car insurance industry.

That's hardly unlimited, Snail. I'd have thought they'd have wanted to keep you on board.
|
i would not have thought these were worth the money
i've made no claims in recent years, but last renewal notice said 550 pounds, ignoring the renewal and buying the same policy from the same company on its web site cost 330 pounds
so "protected no claims" on the 550 is not worth much, and it is only protected if you stay with the same insurer, and they will always charge you more than a new quote at renewal

Does the £330 include a "new customer discount" which would disappear at the next renewal time?

no idea and dont really care, but i did check carefully that there was no clause stopping an exisiting customer signing up

I'm going to check whether I could start from fresh and buy online from my present insurers.

I always do - and did this week.
Renewal £175
Apply on web £143.
Crazy, but it's the same each year.

I used to be with CIS (Co-op) who allowed unlimited claims (and any driver, any age) but their premium became ridiculous.
Moved to Liverpool Victoria/Frizzell/What Car/CSMA (all same company)and they offered protected NCB with 2? claims in 2? yrs or guranteed NCB for an extra £8!! Bit of a no-brainer, although I then paid extra to reduce the excess to the lowest figure possible, as I don't see the point of having guranteed NCB but a high excess.
Liverpool Victoria also score in my book because they don't load the premium for fixed penalty speeding awards - they don't even rquire to be told of them.

You can transfer NCB protection between insurers, as Ive just done this. I had a claim with Bell Direct (Admiral), which was protected, I then moved to Norwich Union, and I phoned them to check and they said as long as I have written proof from Bell then my NCB would remain intact.
|
If you have a protected NCB and say, an accident in November 2004, your NCB is intact. If you then move insurers and thay ask "Any accidents in the last 5 Years" you have to say yes, so how might that affect their quote? Probably better to stay put.
|
It doesn't work like that Armitage. Having a claim will affect your quote, then your NCB is applied, so your quote will go up slightly, but not as much as if you didn't have it protected. I filled in the form online and put details of my accident in, then put I had 5 years NCB. I then called them to check this was OK, which it was.
|
Thanks PR, the circumstances have not arisen but it is good to know what the situation is! Is what you are describing what happened when you stayed with your current insurer or what happened when you had an accident and then changed insurer?
|
Story was I had an accident, car was a write off so the policy was cancelled. I then got quotes from all the ins companies, including the one who the claim was with. Turned out it was cheaper to move to Norwich Union. Hope this helps.
