Rover 75 - to buy or not to buy? - jw edinburgh
My company has offered me the chance to buy a Rover 75 CDT Classic, first registered 06/05/04 (04 reg).

It was run by a recently retired director, and was given to me when he left. It has 12k on the clock, and appears to hev been well looked after.

If I don't buy it I was told it would be sold back to the supplying dealer.

Should I buy it? If yes, how much should I offer. It has not been offered for general sale.

Any advice welcome?

JW Edinburgh.

Depends if you want it or not. The dealer wont want it back so try 6k if you do want it.

My first thought was £6,500 but looking on the Trader people seem to want £10kish for these even for this lower spec version.

I guess that would make it worth £8k to the trade, if they punt it around at least, but I'd only pay that if I really wanted the car.

The airfields full of pre-registered/early lease surendered Rover stock, are now showing up in special-section auctions.

So certainly no shortage of choice @ 1/2 price!!

Wouldn't touch with a barge-pole unless:

1.Had independent warranty to cover you as Rover cover is now dead
2.It was substantially cheaper than anything else in its class.
I suppose if you consider it reliable and have been fine with it so far, it might be a go-er.

If you intend to keep it for some time, beware the fact that certain parts may be in short supply even though it's been a fairly popular model.

There was a number of pre reg 0 mls on ebay recently they did not fetch the reserve of £9000 I would think £6k is far to much 02 fetch around 2750 at auction so I think £4k is ample.

Rover problems aside, I think £4k for a one year old car with £12k on the clock is maybe just being a wee bit ambitious?

I think the point is Mr. G that with the last thousands being released on to the market this is bargain time.

Most people, me included would not touch with a bargepole, the delaer won't want it back, so what would it make at auction?

£4k seems outrageous but not too outrageous.

I'd agree with that...if you are wrong on the £4K now, very soon you will be right anyway.

Despite the Rover turmoils, the fact remains that the 75 is an excellent car and can be obtained at bargain prices since the company's demise.

You can bet that spare parts etc will be available for a considerable time to come as suppliers will be well aware that there is still a large market available for sales, whether for the 75 or the smaller models.

To dismiss this particular 75 out of hand could prove a retrograde step in the long run - every 75 owner I know (and one or two of them have come from Mondeo, Vectra, Laguna etc ownership) are delighted with the car, its comfort and its ride quality.

SOME spart parts will be available for a time (not so sure about considerable). High value unreliable parts may even get manufactured. Small low value parts such as door trims, switches etc likely to run out and be non-replaceable. Likely the scrappies will be making a fortune recycling non-runners.

Also, like the car or not, and I don't, the only way to buy one is with the intention of running it for its useful life. You will not be able to resell these things except for buttons.

Even at £4,000 its not a bargain if you want to sell it after a year and are getting offers of £1,000.

In the long run as Keynes observed we are all dead.

Note that the last figure in each line is the price in pounds. I use a US keyboard that doesn't have a pound symbol so I couldn't insert it when I pasted from the website.
