Got a feeling was fashionable for foreign cars to be LHD in Japan during the 90s. Only a vague recollection so could be completely wrong.
Only reason I remember it was showed some UK cars (minis I think) with LHD. Anyone got any more details?

It was said that for chauffer driven cars, LHD was handy as the driver could get out on to the pavement to open the door for passengers. Maybe the interest spread to other users too, because it's generally difficult to get out a car into the (busy) road in Japan?

Correct.
Having lived in Japan in the 80s I can confirm this. It certainly was the fasion then and I suspect it probably is now.
Even British cars over there were LHD.
