Ok,
I am possibly going to buy a car but need to pick it up pretty sharpish, but wont have my insurance docs in by that time.
Is it totally illegal to drive it home without roadtax?
Advice appreciated.

It is illegal unless going to a prebooked MOT.
It should also be SORNed by the previous owner.
It is also illegal to drive without insurance.
Try it and if you get caught then expect it to be costly.. and get no sympathy.

The OP didn't say he would be driving without insurance, only that he wouldn't have the documents. I suspect that insurance has been set up.

"Possibly" and "sharpish" don't seem compatible in this instance.
Why not ask wherever or whoever you are "possibly" going to buy it from to deliver it "pretty sharpish" to your home, meeting any expenses involved?
You'll get the best of both worlds then without breaking any legal requirements.

book it in for an MOT at the nearest station to you if it passes you get 12 months ticket and you get the car home if it fails you still get the car home ...easy and legal...cheers...keo.
