What are the main differences in these new diesel fuels?
Which one would anyone recommend?
I am about to take delivery of a new Citroen C4 Coupe 2.0HDi VTS, and want to maintain the engine as best as possible, any advice?
Thanks
Delafinion.

I suggest you do a Forum search, you will find enough on this subject to keep you busy until Christmas.

Bizzarely (to me anyway) my best fuel consumption run in my Merc C270Cdi Auto (48MPG) was on a tank of Asda Diesel (+7p of unleaded petrol as I got confused by the credit card pump, which wouldn't take my card!).
I've tried all the others and steadily get 46MPG. The car is only used for long motorway journeys.
I think the Shell Extra costs the same, so it's always nice to think you're getting something for nothing.
My local Shell garage doesn't sell Shell Extra, and my local BP garage only has one Ultimate pump, which often seems to be not working, so either fuel might be harder to get than you would like.
Some people swear by Millers Diesel Power Plus, but apparently it only puts back what's (alledgedly) missing from 'cheaper' (taken to mean supermarket) fuels.

Believe Shell Diesel Extra is now the same price as normal diesel. I use it in my 1.9TD Xsara and was incredibly impressed the first time I used it.
Engine was quieter, smoother, and delivered power where it never had before. As a matter of fact, it was so quiet I forgot to change into 5th gear when joining the M62, so the car got a good 2 minute workout at 4000rpm. Fuel consumption appears to be the same.

As I said on a previous discussion thread, I fill up with 'normal' shell diesel which has a very strong additive smell to it as you are filling. So I maintain that most of the time there never was any diference between the two.
The other day I had to put some Esso diesel in, and this had a totally differnt aroma to it more like a basic crude oil sort of smell..

....but may improve if you use 5th gear. LOL ;-)

Thanks for the information.
However still wondering what the technical/specification differences are?

I regulary use BP Ult due to local garage though reckon Shell and Texaco are better/smoother. BP Ult smells like Millers Diesel Plus, reckon it has similar additives so might be good re lubing injection pump etc.

Not sure what the differences are, but this might interest. When filling up this week at my local Shell garage, which has been serving Diesel Extra, I noticed that all the pumps had been re-labelled "Shell Diesel". I asked the cashier if he knew why, and he revealed that Shell were stopping sale of "Diesel Extra" and would shortly be selling "V-Power Diesel" instead. Apparently the garage were "surveyed for it" (whatever that means) a few weeks ago, so it's coming soon!

I put Shell Diesel Extra in our Trajet last night and it seems to drive much more smoothly. Can't say about the economy.

Using BP Ultimate Diesel on a Golf 130PD the fuel consumption improved slightly but not enough to offset the increased cost of the fuel.

I just filled up at a Shell garage that has just reopened after being rebuilt, and see that it looks likely a new diesel product is imminent, as all pumps had a blank position on the nozzle rack and display. Maybe it will be Christmas diesel with a hint of spice?
Anyone have an idea whether it will be a cheaper one or a premium deluxe heavy-duty one?

BP Ultimate costs 7p extra over supermarket diesel.
Using Millers with the cheaper stuff adds around 1p per litre and produces the same additional smoothness and torque IMHO.
Emissions reading for my Passat PDI was only 0.21 on Friday and I've done 89,000 miles.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

I spoke to someone very senior in diesel engine development;his answer, the cheapest fuel you can buy, additives don't give any power, but then he replaces his car every 12 months.
