The Highways Agency have just built a new bypass around the village of Lamberhurst on the A21 at a cost of several £m.
Now 3 miles to the south they are busy converting the Flimwell bypass back to single carriageway from dual.It is only about 1.5 miles long but provides an overtaking section on an otherwise 20 mile twisty country road.
The Highways agency say it is dangerious hence the conversion (and there have been a number fatalities), but yesterday on the way home, drivers were trying to overtake HGVs in the only other places left - i.e. almost blind single lane roads.
This will surely lead to more fatalities - just in different places.

Have they actually looked into what makes that stretch of road dangerous? Because 'it's a dual cariageway' seems like the least likely of reasons to me.
Let's see... it's got a central reservation separating oncoming traffic. That sounds dangerous to me.
And it's possible to overtake with no risk of meeting something coming the other way? Hells Bells. Close it down immediately!

Cant recall the stretch of road, never been involved in the accident investigations, never been on the risk assesment team, not seen the detailed statistics so I cant comment.

The A6 south of Bakewell suffered the same fate. A short section of dual carriageway was turned into a single carriageway plus cycle track. Overall speed limit of the A6 was dropped to 50mph from Stockport to Derby I believe.
I guess head on accidents at 100mph combined are meant to be safer than one at 120mph.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

I think it was down to cars still going very fast on the last few hundred feet where the road reverts back to single lane.
Also there is a "cross road" halfway along which can cause problems if the crosser does not judge the traffic very well.

Nor can I, nor have I, nor have I , nor have I so I guess nor can I.
What is this, pointless post day?

>What is this, pointless post day?
It means that someone probably has, and has a very very good reason for doing it.

In a similar vein, here in rural oxfordshire the council are changing many of the un-restricted country roads. Many of them are being changed to a 50mph limit(a good idea in SOME areas)but are also deleting broken white lines and replacing them with solid and/or hatched areas, making overtaking impossible(illegal).
You now have very little chance of overtaking, hence increasing drivers frustration when stuck behind slow caravans, farm machinery, lorries etc.It would not suprise me if the incidents of head on collisions increase as drivers make riskier overtaking manouvres. On monday I spent 25 mins.in a long queue of traffic doing 25mph behind a hoplessly underpowered car towing a caravan.
