My missus micras timing is out.how do I adjust it.sometimes it runs fine, others it stalls a lot.its done 100,000 miles so I know its knockin on a bit.thanx giles

Basically you twist/rotate the distributor. Often there is a clamp on which the screw has to be slackened first. On some cars there was once a thumb screw that gave a vernier rotation adjustment.
You need only a very slight rotation for a few degrees timing change.
Make sure your points are good and flat and correctly gapped before you start. A wrong gap can cause timing error.

What makes you think it's the timing that's the problem? Surely if the timing was out, then it would stall all the time rather than only sometimes.
There have ben some previous discussion on stalling Micras - A Forum search (over on the RH side of the page) should find them.

To expand on Buzbee's answer you will also need a timing light and need to know what the timing should be.As DD suggests,it may not be the problem.By all means clean/replace points and check timing(vac advance pipe off) but also clean/replace and gap plugs, check the air filter, put some carb cleaner thru the carb,check/adjust valve clearances.Chances are it will run better after.

Before you move the distributor, check the small flexible vacuum pipes from the vacuum advance unit, (mounted on the side of the distributor.) for splits. Follow the hard black pipe back to the carburettor, and if the pipes are split, change them one at a time, so that way you can be sure that they are connected to their original position. Any splits in the pipe will affect the ignition timing.
If these are Ok, then get the car hot, and then at idle turn the lights on, the engine speed should rise. If not then post back.

Does it have ignition points? If so check them carefully for broken springs, happened on my wife's Toyota Starlet and it made the running quite rough. I'd be tempted to replace them anyway as I think faulty points are more likely than the timing being out.

With all respect Tony engine speed should drop when you put an electrical load on it.When I did mobile tuning we always put the lights on to make sure idle speed was not set too low.

My wife's D reg Micra has done 98k miles and began to suffer stalling. Took it to local Nissan independent, they changed HT leads, car ran a whole lot better. But I tried a trick I have used in the past when the car suffered from cutting out. I took the air cleaner lid off and poured a redex product straight into the carb, did this gradually. Clouds of blue/black reek, you need to keep revs up but the engine idle improved greatly, then re filled as normal with a full tank of Texaco unleaded and car has run very well since the "clean out". Also changing engine oil every 5k as car is used as city runabout has helped to keep original engine going strong. I also stopped using supermarket petrol as car ran really rough when hot under stop/start city conditions and stalled.
