Does this stuff (fuel cleaner & injection cleaner) actually work?
The stuff you put straight into your petrol tank to clean fuel and to and to make your car run smoother etc.
If its any good what one should I buy?
Regards,
Dave

I too would like to know if it actually works. I have heard so many stories I'm not sure what to do.
We have got several old vans at work which always fail their MOT on emissions but after adding RedEx and driving around for a good few miles, they seem to pass with no problems.
Only recently a garage recommended I start using it in my car in order to avoid any problems with the fuel injection system becoming clogged with dirt - apparently they are prone to this sort of problem??

Friend of mine used to work for a Saab dealer and once told me that they always recommended STP fuel additive/injection cleaner to any customers who said their cars were feeling lathargic.
It was one of the few honest garages who told their customers, we can replace your clogged up injectors and charge you lots of money for the priveledge, or you can put this additive in and it'll cost you a fiver. Your choice mate.
Apparantely most customers later gave feedback to the mechanics that their suggestion had worked.

Yes they do work, or at least the VAG one works for me. Do a Forum search on "G 001 700 03" (the part number) and you'll find plenty of previous discussion.

Amazing
I put some of this stuff - the Wynns brand - into my car today and was gonna start my own thread, but i'll use this instead.
Was going to ask I should drive the car any differently while the stuff works it way through the tank of petrol.
Would hard driving, and high revs help clean the fuel system any better, or is taking it easy a better approach?

From what I have read you drive normaly. The additive works as you drive.. ie the carp is burnt during combustion process and leaves through the exhaust-thats the theory anyway?

Correction to my earlier post. It wasn't STP, it was the Wynns injection cleaner.

Aren't they all just paraffin with a drop of ethanol and gear oil?

I'm quite interested in this VAG cleaner. How much are we talking of? Can you purchase it anywhere other than a VAG dealer?
|
It's available only from VAG dealers, who rarely have it in stock and are often unfamiliar with it, so give them the part number. I bought the last lot from Wayside (St Albans) and it cost me £6.26 per 150ml bottle (after 10% discount on 12 bottles, which I asked for); a bottle gives you enough to add to 150 litres of fuel. Its price has risen 44% over the past five years.
|
I have just ordered a bottle from my local VW Dealer. The price was £6.96 plus VAT, which would be £8.18 inc. VAT. The part number was accurate.
At £4.99 for the standard STP Fuel Injector Cleaner (which treats one tankful), if this stuff treats 150 litres (about three tanks) it would be a fair bit cheaper.
I'd be interested in what people think about the use of paraffin and how this works to the same effect when used instead of the above.

With reference to opening thread, what do you mean by 'fuel cleaner'? These products dont work by cleaning the actual fuel theyre added to, but by cleaning the route through which the fuel travels.
|
Surely, a good old Italian Tune up, using quality fuel, works just as well? Or is this something different.
Doesn't the cost of Wynns or VW stuff, make buying Optimax seem cheap?
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
Even though i run my car exclusively on Optimax,I find the occasional shot of STP very benificial. The car seems to run much smoother afterwards.
As for Italian tuning, the last time I tried it cost me a £60 speeding fine!!
|
Why not just replace the fuel filter and use good quality fuel?
An alternative to additives is to have the injectors ultrasonically cleaned.

\"Nothing less than 8 cylinders will do\"
|
Or the lo-tech approach of highly sonic injector cleaning. You rag the guts out of your car whilst yelling "look, I know she never gets you above 2000rpm, but you will start running properly, you pile of junk!"
Worked on ex Mother-out-law's Fiesta. I call it the Dagenham tune up.

I suspect that if you use 2nd gear instead of 5th, it will save you money :-)

By fuel cleaner I mean "fuel cleaner"! That's what it say's on the bottle... Fuel and injection cleaner. It's ment to clean any junk build-up, make your car run smoother, better mpg and faster (so it claims).
I am asking does this stuff really work?
|
The only ones I've tried are Slick 50 and Forté. Both are expensive, but the Forté is particularly good, but you can't obtain it that easily, it being a trade-only product(Apparently they sell it in ATS, expect to pay at least £10 a bottle). Even though most brands say they treat up to 50 litres of fuel or whatever, best not have the cleaner as dilute as maximum recommendation for maximun cleaning power!
|
Whenever I use these I put it in a full tank of fuel, when I am going to be doing a long journey. The results after a five hour drive to Cornwall were good, it pulled like a train!
|
|
Forté. Apparently they sell it in ATS,
As well as at most Vauxhall dealers.

I read somewhere that, with cars fitted with a cat., they befenfit from a good run, getting the cat. really hot, then after a prolonged period of driving, if you lift off the throttle rapidly and hold off (a bit like lifting off at 80 to exit a motorway) the crap comes off the cat., giving it a clean. Apparently cars which fail the MOT on emmissions often pass after this particluar type of "Italian tune-up" I don't know how it works but I make sure I do it a few times on a long journey.
I make sure my car gets an "Italian tune-up" at least once a month. I also like to give it a long 3-4 hour run at motorway speeds if poss. Personally I think most decent cars are capable of this and more and it's good for them.
In my Mondeo manual there is even advice on different tyre pressures to use for "prolonged cruising above 100 mph" or words to that effect.
Going back to the fuel system cleaner, can anyone advise me how often I should be using the VAG additive?
|
Up to you how often you use an additive. It does no harm to use it at every fill-up, but many would regard that as wasteful.

So that's every fill-up for the Bentley, every 5K for the Mondeo.
Picking mine up tommorow (fuel cleaner not Bentley) I'll keep you posted on any results.

And also Nissan/Renault delaerships too I understand. Although my local VX dealer was trying to sell me FORTRON products instead of Forte...so be warned.
