SWMBO's car went into the garage today because of ringing sound on the front pads, which came on and off when I braked.
Garage fitted new pads. I was told that this is a new wear warning mechanism when the pads are on their way out. Whatever happened to the old warning light mechanism??

Hardly "new" - they are 'squeal pins' (a folded metal 'springy thing') rivetted to the front pads. Been fitted on Jap cars for many years. I really like them. Cheap, simple, no electrics to give false alarms or go wrong. And you can't ignore them (unless you're deaf, which I suppose is a consideration)!

As Aprilia says - old hat. ISTR the wires that went to the pads always used to disintigrate as they were so exposed. Aftermarket pads didn't have the connectors. Squeelers are much more effective. I guess if you're deaf, the giveaway is everyone turning in your direction to look where the noise is coming from when you brake.

I agree with the above.Cheap but reliable

i normally find that when the metal pad backing is screeching against the disc is about the right time to change the pads
