Rear brake light needs replaced. Found a plastic cover at rear of light cluster with a Tab. Do I just pull it off? Also, where can I get a home maintenance manual (like Haynes) for my Passat?

Have a look at this thread:

There is no Haynes manual (or similar) available for your Passat. There is, however, lots of info on the Passat on this forum. Just do a search.

I hate to ask... do you have the owners manual?

Look on the Haynes web site for details about a maintenance manual.

Good luck in your quest.

None available. Tried the Haynes site before my earlier request. 2001 Model is latest manual.

OOPS, wrong answer. Yes I have the owners manual. No maintenance info included.

My apologies for seeming brusque, but all the VAG cars I have had (including VW) have a 'Do-it-yourself' section, including info on changing bulbs. Are you sure you don't have this in your owners manual?

Normally the tabs are gently squeezed in towards the centre, which releases the catches, and the cover comes off...

From about 2001 on most VW handbooks have no information whatsoever about changing light bulbs. They all 'refer to dealer'. In fact some of the light bulbs; i.e. front parking lights on recent Golfs, are an absolute nightmare even involving the removal of the front bumper! Interestingly the latest Skoda Fabia handbook gives precise details on bulb changing despite them being VAG group members.

my vag golf (mk5)handbook tells you how to change all the bulbs?

I have managed to work out how to change headlamp bulbs on my 2002 model Passat. Still got the scars on my hands. But so far not had to replace rear bulbs. Manual indeed refers to dealer for all such matters. At least the rear has four bulbs!

I stand corrected, and I'm surprised that something that can get an owner fines/penaly points isn't covered in the manual.

My 2003 Leon and my 2005 Audi A4 (both VAG) have a bulb changing section in the 'self help' sections of the manuals. Is it only VW that doesn't?

I might be speaking out of turn here, but I don't think you can get points on your licence for extinguished bulbs alone. And this would go for a headlight that was out. There will be a non-specific offence that would attract a non-endorseable fine, but then that would be on the extreme scale. An example would be the unneccessary use of 'fog lights' whilst driving udner clear night sky - the offence here is 'causing undue dazzle' for example which can be used for someone driving around using their main beams...

Generally speaking though people don't realise they have light(s) out until thats pointed out to them or the bulb fails enroute (IE: they checked before they started their journey, but it has failed since) and a polite word usually is all that is needed. However something a little more dangerous - like a car that has no working brake lights can be forcibly 'removed from the road' by a suitably qualified Traffic Officer for it is considered dangerous.

So I wouldn't really fret, just for my own safety, I'd get the bulbs changed.
