PROJECT CAR - marko
I have been thinking about getting myself a ?project car? for some time and have decided that 2002 is to be the year. I?d like something that has sturdy simple mechanicals, can carry two adults and two kids on occasional outings and is British. Budget for initial purchase is £500. Any suggestions?

Land Rover Series IIa.

But I would say that.

Regulars will know what's coming here!

Morris Minor 1000 (avoid series II or earlier as they are rather slow, and less easy for some parts).

Meets your requirements - British, four seats (and easy to fit belts for the kids), plus sturdy, simple mechanicals.

Reasonably priced and readily available parts, easy to repair/maintain, cheap to run, classic insurance, £0 tax, excellent owners club.

As with any classic, expect some work with a £500 budget though.

and remember that the travellers wood WILL rot.

Chris

Yes - I should have warned about that! Very expensive if needed.

The wood is a structural member, so can be an MOT fail. Avoid unless you really want a small estate car.

Re: PROJECT CAR - ladas are slow
i had a traveller once (bought at auction for £200 inc auction fees) and the wood was rotten.

(the car was stolen the following day, probably by the person who sold it)
